Not IXUS 850IS? Put another one into your list of consideration - Fujifilm F31fd.
The Olympus and Panasonic aren't worth considering IMHO. |

Most compacts give very noisy ISO800 and above so the ISO1600 does not appeal to me. 6 to 7.1MP -- little diff. And Face Detection... Ermm, it's an ingenious technology but somewhat superfluous to me. In fact, I don't understand the kind of "games" digicam companies like Canon play. It's a profit/market thingy perhaps. They could have just released the 850 straightaway and do away with the 800. |

You should really consider the Fujifilm I mentioned, around $580 (GST inclusive) with 1GB. Check out the Fujifilm forum.

actually, the main difference between the 850 and 800 is that the 850 has a 28mm lens, while the 800 is 35mm equivalent.
that's the reason why it's a more expensive, and the reason why i got that. hehe |

Please take note that the 800IS has a zoom range of 35mm-140mm whereas the 850IS has 28mm-105mm. Personally I would prefer the wider lens of the 850IS. Just something for you to think about.

Thanks for the advices guys. The 850 costs 612(w/o GST) and my budget is ard 500. Hence, i thought of getting the 800 if the difference is not really that great. Been reading up on all the reviews, since like canon camera produces quite good images. Is there other brand/model that you guys out there would recommend for my budget? Just some simple requirement: reduce hand shake, can take good pictures in low light.

Yup, an F30 is in fact a good choice too if you have a budget to stick to.
I've played with the 850IS and F31fd/F11. Personally, I feel that the F31fd and F11 are very flexible in terms of their settings. Note that they come with Aperture and Shutter Priority too, which are very handy, but not available for the 850IS. Image Quality for Canon has in fact dropped. Though the 850IS is still an impressive camera, I no longer see the sharpness in it, and there's no flexibility of changing Flash and ISO in most modes. ISO at 400 is only fairly usable, while it's very usable for Fujifilm up to 800. And in case you're thinking, Megapixel isn't everything nowadays. |

Wat about Image Stabilization? I know Fuji F30 doesnt have that? Wouldnt that affect the image quality, since it doesnt have that function. Or the higher ISO would compensate for that?

IS is a good to have, and will help prevent image blur (not quality) from occurring due to handshake under low light with shutter speed generally up to 1/8 shutter speed. Anything lower, IS won't help much IMHO. Do note that IS also won't help if the subject is moving under low light with slower shutter speed. Most of the time, I see the ISO of the 850IS being bumped up, since it's Auto ISO under most modes. That sucks, as the noise will affect the image quality definitely. For F30, the cleaner high ISO do compensate for the IS since a higher shutter speed can be used. |

I am looking for my first digital camera too. My candidates are 850IS and F31fd.
I like 850IS because of SD card, IS and somehow I find its body is more attractive. And it has 7.1 MP instead of 6.3 MP (F31fd) But F31fd has been praised a lot because of its good performance in low lighting. Actually F30 has been praised. Not too sure about F31fd, maybe because it is a pretty new camera. And because of low lighting capability, newer and cheaper(!), I am thinking to get F31fd. 1. Is 850IS really not that good in low lighting? How about its higher MP? 2. Ultrazoom mentioned "Aperture" and "Shutter Priority". I am a newbie in camera and I'd like to get into photography soon (not professional). Are these two functionals very important? Thank you! e.t. |

800IS is a waste of time and not sure about 850IS. Try to shot near lamp/lights source and you will see a line on the screen. This is extremely irritating especially if you have paid so much.
I am havin 800IS and will not consider another Canon P&S but their SLR are still very good. Have fun! |
