i believe he meant the 58mm (5.8cm) f1.2 Noct which is indeed a very special lens as it is optimized for low light use. Probably retails for a bout $2000 now.

Leo Foo's website is always a good place to start for old Nikkor lens info. Now even steadily updating with AF lenses too.
See his page with some info on this lens at: http://www.mir.com.my/rb/photography...kor/index1.htm The above page also points to http://home.planet.nl/~nicodijk/standardlens.pdf which has a short history |

Nikon's Thousand and One Nights article at http://www.nikon.co.jp/main/eng/port...kkor/n02_e.htm
Leo Foo's page at http://www.mir.com.my/rb/photography...1stnikkors.htm says: 5cm f/2 Nikkor-S Auto 7 elements in 6 groups 46 degrees angle of view Note: later upgraded to a 6 element, 4 group design (reputedly much sharper after upgrade) $89 list (1965) with body purchase o/w $91.95; $87.95 list (6E/4G) (1967) |

It also explains why Nikon AF28/1.4 is so much more expensive than Sigma 30/1.4. So far, it is very hard to find lenses that performs so well at wide open except Nikkors.
Edit: I think all the articles are all worth a read. It really explains Nikon's philosophy in the lens design. A lot of thought is put into them and I'm utterly impressed!! One interesting read is the Micro 70-180. They managed to maintain the maximum aperture over the largest magnification all the way to infinity for a particular focal length. There is a table which compares with the other Macro lenses. Last edited by lsisaxon; 13th December 2006 at 09:28 PM. |

A bit OT, but since the TS had mentioned "special" and "mysterious" lens quality, the article on the legendary 105mm f2.5 lens gives a big hint as to what makes these lenses so good for portraits. As I understand it, they actually tweak the lens design so that there is actually some spherical/other aberration and curvature of field to get that "snap and pop". So it seems that the OLD lenses mentioned so far in this thread may have that special quality because the design isn't "perfect" but has a balance of aberrations that give that distinctive "look". |

I think that is the P or G series. And not the AI/AIS sold previously. OT: off
