planning to get my first DSLR and comparing between these 2 models.
of course, the D40 is more affordable while the D80 has the upper hand over D40... but using the dpreview compare chart, it seems like a close fight between both models.... http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/comp...n_d80&show=all unless the D80 price would drop, life will be less headache to own my first D80..... they are very diff... d80 got a far more function than the d40(else why is the price doubled) d80 offer 11pts AF while d40 only 3pts. d80 are able to use non AF-S lens while d40 are crippled with only the use of AF-S or HSM lens... and many many more including 10MP vs 6MP.
if you think there are no different, then go for the d40... Last edited by ExplorerZ; 9th December 2006 at 10:38 AM. |

Apart from what was mentioned by ExplorerZ, perhaps you may consider the operation of both cameras by checking the Nikon Digitutor website before making your choice.

You can compare the D40 and D50, as they are more similar in functions and target group.

Both will give u good pics.. Go for the one that suits ur budget more.. I dun think u will go wrong with either. Coz both is Nikon and they will give u the choice of a vast array of Nikon lenses.. Even though the D40 cant AF with non-AFS lenses.. But I think most newbies to Nikon Dslrs nowadays own more AFS lenses than the non-AFS so shouldnt be a problem.

Do check on the lens that you may consider before getting the body.

I agree. Personally I would recommend the D50 over the D40. Try looking for good deals at the Buy/Sell threads.

I'd recommend if you are not planning to upgrade soon, buy a D40. Use it, learn from it. If you like it still after some years, then plan the next upgrade. If you don't like, you won't lose too much when selling it.
Unless you've used a dSLR and really like it, get a better range like D80 or D200, then you can use it extensively. No matter what, realise that when you change bodies, you'll definitely lose money (unless you're a professional). If not so sure, maybe buy second hand where you won't lose as much money as if you've bought new. |

I've seen people investing on expensive DSLRs, and yet using them to take photos like a compact camera without real knowledge.
You have to decide how far you wish to go. Don't get a camera just because everyone is telling you that it's good and more advanced. Not making full use of its goodness = bad. |
