Default Monochrome on 400d

hi all,

just got my 400d, converted from film. love it already.

anyway, with the 400d there's the monochrome picture style mode. wondering if anyone knows whats the algorithm used to convert to b/w (i.e. do they shoot in true b/w [not likely i think] or is it just discarding all the colour data like in photoshop converting to grayscale)

if not i guess i'll carry on shooting in raw and use the trusty channel mixer

thanks!
