Not necessary if you use a telephoto lens with a tripod collar.

It's necessary, if you are using the monopod properly.

One reason why I use a monopod head.

TO allow for easy release from monopod (QR plate).

The only way to use a monopod properly is to use a telephoto lens with a tripod collar, where the CG of the whole setup roughly rests above the monopod. Even a ball head when tilted will make the monopod go out of balance and it will be entirely up to the user to hold the whole setup steady. So for the rest of the ways, I'd rather not use a monopod because it is more troublesome.

As for quick release, just turn the whole monopod about 4 rounds, it should come off already. Why bother with a quick release?
