Anyone uses Steadicam here?

Hi,
I just want to get a feel whether there is a community of steadicam operators in SG. Thot of getting a set to learn then offer my services.

There are quite a number production houses here who has the stuff with trained cameraman to operates it. You hire the entire rig with the operator.

I've read somewhere that Steadicam operators are only licenced to use the devices for a specified time period (10yrs?). Due to possible back problems that might develop from it's use and operation. Is this true or just hearsay?

there is a Steadicam course which is conducted in the USA.

So far , i believe only less than 3 dudes have gone for it.

Personally, handling a Steadicam unit requires you to be slight rolly polly. helps to keep it snug and the key thing is your balance. But not much use here i believe.

I know of some guy who does steadicam for concert.
Man that steadicam is heavy . Usually that guy will be quite a bulky and well built .
People who are small built might have an issue with it.
Are there any upcoming course for steadicam

one of these days, must rent one and try to see what it can do .

About the back pain, it always hurts when you first try because large steady cams are really heavy, can easly go over 20kgs..But after alot of hours with it and alot of hours in the weight room, youll be ok, at least for periods of 30mins, where after that, well, you change turns with your assistant...Haha...

I dunno how it works in SG, but in Jakarta, steady cam operators are relatively cheap, so usually I just hire operators..about SD$550 with a D50, steadycam, and operator..so its pretty reasonable here..whats the deal for operators in SG?

Steadycam operartor is higher i think. Got a few that i am impress with .
let me know if you need any recommendation. Guess Jakarta got a lot more.

You have not seen the some really small guys rigging a large steadicam rig in a chase scene, man their movements are fantastically smooth and fast

It's IMHO that there's a demand for good steadycam operators - especially in the film and commercial space. Note however, that it's definitely not for the light hearted or the average person.

I knew the first steadycam operator in Singapore many moons ago, who's now working in Hollywood. He was a big guy, and even then, could only operate it for about 15 mins at a time.

It can be exhausting - bearing in mind that the operator's body not only carries the full weight on the brace, arm, camera (film camera's aren't the lightest), batteries, monitor, counter weights, etc. and is in constant motion.

Note though, that I'm referring to the full fledge professional steadycam for film cameras like Arri, Panavision, etc.

For those who wanna know the biological nitty gritty, operation of a steadicam is especially harsh on noobies because the use of the steadicam requires a core muscle that is not used unless one is pregnant. Therefore unless you have recently been pregnant, its gonna be awhile before joo are able to operate it effectively. Not to mention the issues of a center of gravity that is much further in front than it is naturally, making the operator especially prone to tipping over while using the unit, should he be inexperienced.

Regarding the comment about only being able to use it for 10 years, quite the contrary. People who have used the steadicam for 10 years and above are considered highly sought after due to the experience that they would have amassed from using it. This thus introduces the paradox of the steadicam - the younger you are, the more stamina you have to use it for longer periods of time, but you are too inexperienced to be able to use it effectively, whilst when you are older, you are better able to use the steadicam, but can only use it for short periods of time as a result of your failing body.

I've seen a ex-ballet dancer handle a Steadicam. She is as skinny as the skinny Singaporean girls here. And she's small sized.

It is her opinion, in fact that being small and light helps her move around corners with the steadicam. Indeed, she saw the US larger "rolly polly" counterparts stumble and fall around but she handled it okay. It's all in the balance and using the right muscles. I suspect that as a ballet dancer she knows her body well to know what to use and how to use it.

Malek, jackie, david yeung. I cant remember the rest. tried it once also. very tiring, requires a good posture. basically you need some training before you can use it.

The production company I work for here in America has a Steadicam and it is friggin' heavy haha. The only guy that can operate it is our supervisor and he is a HUGE guy. I know Boku Productions has one. At least that was a few months ago when I last met Kelvin Tong at his house for tea. Mediacorp obviously has it - Though one of their PAs told me the last time they used it was for Singapore Idol. They use mostly tracked dollies with PD150s or Sony Betacams for most of their Channel 8/5 stuff.

if we are using on prosumer cameras like the Dvx and PD, guess a glidecam will be more relevent? so far never see any using locally.

we had a glidecam for use the dvx100a. not really that good compared to steadycam, the manual is abysmal. better off saving money for the Flyer-SE.
