Any thots on the online buying of videocams from USA? MUCH cheaper - even with the steep freight charges thrown in
NTSC should not be a problem as most editing software accept NTSC. So do DVD players & TVs Wonder whether their warranty will be honoured here in SG? |

I doubt it's much cheaper (as far as the AG-DVX is concerned). I checked for pricing on the DVX100b (PAL) model and the cheapest I could get was approx USD$3100+ (excluding the shipping charges which can amount close to another USD$100+. Convert everything it's close to SG$5k. The DVX102B in SG should be around the region of SG$3600-$3700+
I've not researched the other cameras though. |

If i'm not wrong, expandore's selling grey set.
When I was there, they say their cam is for export and no local warranty. And they quoted quite high price also ......maybe they only do business with people they know. Those shops in SLS also not really selling semi-pro videocam. Those that do, like videopro, does not look keen to make a sale. Not possible to touch and test out the camera before buy. That's why I bought from sensys where I can play a bit with the cam before purchase. Service is better. |

Yah.. the SLS people will go like, you confirm you want then I bring down and let you try... My partner and I was getting a A1 system, we go scout around asking for price and we reached this XXX shop, they man dun even know what is the Sony HVR A1P system, then he anyhow qoute, thinking we are not serious, then he say $3000, best price... then talk with confience, you want?? I go and take... you want??? Not knowing that we are ready buyers... we say... ok lor, bring it down... then the joker went off and came back telling us the camera is $3800.00... what a waste of time. typical screw up shop. Anyway, I suggest potential buyers to try it out at SLT... better pricing actually than SLS. But.......... ,,,,,,,,,,,,, ............ PLEASE DO YOUR HOMEWORK BEFORE PURCHASE!!! |

Expandore can get local warranty for a price about $400 more for Sony and $250 for Panasonic. But ask them about an international insurance coverage about $200 for 2 years, it's better if you intend to travel overseas with the cam.

A noob question...but if I use an NTSC cam, will there be problems in editing? Consumer editing software like Pinnacle Studio...?

CYAW, PAL is inherently higher res and better than NTSC, which is why it is 20% more expensive. Living in PAL-world, you should get PAL-cam, and pay PAL-price.
The pros outweight the cons, seriously. Like flickering, banding, pulldown of frames by software, interpolations, blah-blah so much to talk about. Just stick to PAL. If you are in USA, Japan or Taiwan, buy NTSC. Buying from B&H means you can't try the cam, and if you want to return, you pay the shipping, both ways. I'll say, go to Alan Photo or whichever else, and buy the model you want there. I have gone through this 5 years ago. |

Hi Yowch
How are things? Still using the F700 as a RAW spare? You can get PAL hardware from B&H if you want but I concede on the risks of buying stuff from the States and warranty problems. So far it's just a idea I have toyed with given the attractive pricing although some CSers have done it without having their fingers burnt. On specs PAL beats NTSC but I think most folks would be hard pressed to spot the difference in real life. Thanks for the PALly advice. After considering all things, particularly the warranty issue, I bought the vidcam from AP a month ago and have been enjoying it ever since. |

On home movies, videos, not much difference between PAL and NTSC, but once it gets to graphics, words, sub-titles; or when it gets to high action/motion, the resolution and frame-rate difference will be seen. so which cam is it?
The F700 is great. Went in to Fuji once for sensor change, and once more for internal battery change. Still going strong and good. And good value, too - there are people out there still looking for this little gem of a camera. |

Great to hear that the F700 is going strong.
I got the Sony SR100. Dollar for dollar it can't beat mini DVs for quality and Sonys are traditionally dumbed down for consumers but the convenience is astounding and the quality is nothing to sniff at. Great for hobbyists like me but not for tahchiaks. What's your weapon? |
