I just noticed that the 85mm f1.4 has some very noticeable fringing issue shooting at f1.4 for OOF stuff.
Photozone also noted this issue. http://www.photozone.de/8Reviews/len...5_14/index.htm My sample ![]() Even for such a reduced size sample, you can see the green fringe around the top of the chair. If you blow it up a little, it is very obvious. Is this normal for all 85mm f1.4, ie can I hope to get a better sample? |

Normally I shoot with f/2. This will reduce it or try not to shoot at contrasting subjects

I am pretty happy with my lens. It is really quite sharp even at f1.4 even at the corners which is quite remarkable.
It is just the fringing which was unexpected. Focusing at f1.4 seems to be easier than I expected. I thought the thin DOF is going to be more of a problem. |

The fringing on high contrast out of focus areas is typical of this lens. Read somewhere that this is due to the IF design, and it appears to a greater or lesser degree in most IF design lenses.

pity that this fact is not really highlighted on all the recommedations/discussions abt this lens, especially since this is supposedly one the best nikkor for bokeh, ie people recommed it for good bokeh.
Does the 105mm DC suffer from this? But to be fair, all the other aspects of this lens is TOP NOTCH. |

what is ghosting? When I use the word "fringing" I use it as a layman term loh. Some color fringing at the sides.
I think there are many causes to fringing. Some can be lens, some can even be software related like my s3pro shows fringing with you use ACR to develop raw files. Anyway, your fringing very little, much less than what my 85mm f1.4 shows. At the end of the day it is not that serious a problem. The f1.4 is really quite different from my old tamron 75mm f2.8. |
