Gold Rush

Was raining HEAVILY on the 2 Feb 2003 at the annual River AngBao. Just amazed by the fact that these folks can get themselve soaking wet just to pick up those little glitters, dropped by the God of Fortune

Thankfully, my camera's weather proof...

Well done! The traits of the typical Singaporean is very well captured in here... really puts us all to shame, doesnt it?

What so shameful about people queueing up orderly for some decent tickets?? Have we tend to be rather sensitive or over-reactive with stereotypical singaporean behaviours, like kiasuism?

btw, have you not seen football fanatics rioting for balls? who should be shameful for them?

Look carefully at the picture again, you think it is orderly? Maybe you should have heard all the profanities that were used when these people were queueing. People were literally pushing each other for these tickets.

To be frank, Singaporeans have this "we're-ok-cos-we're-not-the-worst" or "other people also like that what" mentality.

Boochap, I certainly hope that we're not comparing ourselves to to others. There are many examples around, and what you mentioned about nation with people "pushing each other for tickets" is certainly not one of these yardstick.

I like the Gold Rush pictures, I still can't understand people shoving each other for so call "GOld Flakes". And most of them never satisfy with one, they tend to scoop as many as possible (greediness?).

The colur pics so grainy, you use very high ISO setting?
Anyway I like the expression and story in these pictures.

I think the "Free Tickets" picture is a classic. The sign, the queue of people, and the motion blur and expressions on the faces of those running tell a great story.

I personally don't think there is much of a difference between people all over the world. Human nature is the same everywhere. It just depends on the prevalent culture. Put a so-called civilized person in a country with a "brash" culture long enough, and sooner or later his or her behaviour will change to suit the culture. Just think of a Katong driver who starts driving regularly along Bukit Timah Road. The reverse also applies.

I don't know but I find that Kiasu thingy is in everyone of us, just depend on what interest u to perform this act.
And the worst is out of the whole world only Singaporean willing to call themself "scare to lose"
In UK people there are queueing up for boxing day sales outside branded shops. This is also kiasu.
I went for a europe tour, on breakfast (provided) in Hotel, almost all in the coach packed "extra" breakfast to eat as lunch, The only different is Singaporean pack it after all had eaten and quite openly, those ang mos pack it the moment the reach the table and do it under the table.
Went to river ang pow yesterday, around 5pm, noted that those people right in front of the rows are mostly not Singaporean.
For me, I not interested in these so you never see me there, but that don't mean that I am not Kiasu. If there is a good fireworks displays that I have time for, I will go 2 hr eariler to find a good spot, But normally there will be people there before me. Trust me if a D100 or D1 selling at $2K or less, you might see me queueing there liao.

The last time I did this with a D30, the camera fogged at the LCD, but not this one, hehe.
some pix that were unusable because the whole filter was filled with water droplets...putting my lenses and cam under water torture.

Had two assignments in the rain so far, nothing happened...yet

Knighthunter: the grain u see in the last pix is because I was trying out the in-camera sharpening (highest setting). Obviously, photoshop is still a better option...
