you want rapid fire, sure risk to blow your flash, and some underexpose images, all you need to do is......
    pace your shoot...
    use bigger f stops..
    use higher ISO...
    get closer to your subjects...
    use fresh batteries only...
tell your subjects to slow down or wait...

if you have money to burn, get a battery pack.

btw hor, dunno about your understanding of flash...

but i guess when u say 3rd shot black, most likely you used 1/1 for your shots...

i recommend u do a test, shoot at iso 400 or 800, if you are shooting at iso 200. by doing that you will use only 1/2 the power. and significantly make your 3 shot same as the capacitor still charged.

or you can manually set to 1/2 or 1/4 power and try.

need help, later i show u if i am free... hehe.

having worked daily with quantum turbo 2x2s (and other battery packs) for almost 3 years now, i would say nothing comes close to the 2x2 when u have to factor in weight, size, output power and versatility. of course on the other end of the equation u'll have high costs. =)
    sigh.

if use 1/128 and u only get 2 shots continuously... i think u can send your SB800 back to service already, probably 1 of the capacitor burnt...
