The issue I had was the recharge time. It is really quite slow... even to amatuer people like me who does not need to capture the exact moment..

Hi guys,

I am also contemplating getting a flash... tossing up between the FL36 and FL50...

One of the key diff i've heard is that the FL50 re-charges faster... But i also thought that i wun need that kind of speed since i'm not exactly a pro etc etc...

But hearing ur testament, FL36 is that SLOW huh?
Any other key differences?

The 36 takes 6 seconds on fully charged batteries to recharge after a full power flash.

The 50 has more power as well, 50m vs. 36m.

The 50 also has more options....you can use an EXTERNAL battery pack, including the high voltage battery pack. You can also use the FP-01 flash grip which can trigger both the flash and the camera.

That was EXACTLY what I was thinking when I bought the FL36 over the FL50. I thought I won't need the speed. But on actual usage I found it too slow when i was trying to capture the parade in Everland. On paper it may say 6 seconds, but on actual usage it seems to be like 10+ seconds. Anyway, recharge speed is also dependent on the type of batteries used, charge remaining, etc.

BUT, the FL-50 is twice the price of the FL-36...

the thing is to change batteries regularly. On full-chraged out of the box batteries, it takes 3-4 seconds(or instant sometimes) to get the flash power. But when the batteries are getting weak, no doubt it will take 10+ seconds. Change the batteries when the recharge time is getting slow.

FL-50 does have a longer range.

FL-50 recharge better due to the number of batteries it holds. if you can get a hold on a battery pack then it shouldnt be an issue for recharging.

normal "play play" just get the fl-36 unless you want to shoot other creatures like models or birds or wat ever then get fl-50.

shoot companys' events or wedding, then regardless of wat, you will have to use a battery pack.

I have FL-36 & uses it regularly. Getting fed up of the waiting time the flash will work liao. At least 6sec... Can never get continous flash, which i can when i used a FL-50 once. Big difference in performance between the 2. The first time i use a FL-50, i was impressed that it can fire off continously with the multiple shots... The FL-36 could never.

Can anyone please elaborate more on the EXTERNAL battery pack? Where can I get one and how much would one cost? Thanks.

If you look at the following image, you can see the FL-50 hooked up to an external battery pack:

Note that while it does speed up recharge times, you should be careful not to overdue the flash's duty cycle (the amount of high output activations within a certain time period).

Maybe you can consider Metz flash for your camera.

Someone ever mentioned in another thread the external battery pack for the FL-50 is as expensive as FL-50 itself...

The original oly external battery pack DOES NOT cost as much as the FL-50.

It costs more.
