The AF 28-70mm f/2.6-2.8 ATX Pro II is excellent, so are the previous editions. The optics are based on the legendary Angenieux 28-70 which is also highly regarded. In my use, it's sharp from f/4 onwards. A bit soft at f/2.8. Some people complain of it being flare prone but have not experienced it (coz I tend not to shoot into the light).

The ATX 280 is 28-80/2.8, but apparently not as good in terms of sharpness. But it does give you 10mm more (if that matters) and fixed a few quirks in the 28-70, as well as improved minimum focal distance.

The 270 can be had in the used market for $400 or less.
