SB28 has "auto" mode? auto means it will auto adjust the light power, eventho using non-TTL?

YowCH is here! Aiyah, work nowadays so busy I don't have tme to visit Clubsnap so often like before.
Nikon's SB speedlights have Auto mode that senses the reflected light. Therefore, even if you use bounce, your exposure should still be quite OK. Best to get SB800 (at a VERY high price of $500++). But in terms of balancing cost and performance, any of the older flash models are OK, say SB 24, 25, 26, 28, 28DX and 80DX. Price ranges from $100 to $300 second hand (shops don't carry these anymore). For S9500, learn to use Manual mode with manual flash control. I ahve shot many weddings on my S602zoom (non-TTL) and using a brandless flash in Manual mode, just dial the Aperture setting to control flash power. You'll master it very fast. TTL flash is really idiot-proof mode. So much for Nikon's Creative Lighting System... ![]() That siad, I use S2pro with TTL on SB 80DX now, Nikon's idot-proof flash works pretty well. |

oh, oyabi is here (big guru)
![]() You suggested the following flash, SB 24, 25, 26, 28, 28DX and 80DX. Do they all work with the dumb-hotshoe on the S9500, and all have that auto-sensor too? Actually my need is quite simple - bounce capable, and has auto-sensor. Also, as an extra, the recycle time should not be too slow... What flash do you recommend for me? As good value (price/performance) as possible because I'm poor ![]() |

yup, all have auto-sensor. you might want to consider SB28, SB28DX or SB80DX though as they're significantly smaller and lighter than the earlier models. you just need to sync the ISO and Aperture and use a zoom position that's wider than u're lens and you're set to go
![]() btw, I'm using a Nikon SB28 with my Canon DSLR too ![]() |

SB 24, 25, 26, 28, 28DX, 80DX, 600 and 800 are all able to swivel head, and has built in range calculator, pretty good stuff. They are all top-of-the-range at some point in time (except for the SB 600). Recycle time is best on the SB 80DX and SB 800. The newer ones are lighter, as mpenza said. But the older ones are cheaper. SB 800 has a 5th battery option should you want to up the 1.2V x 4 = 4.8V of rechargables to 1.2V x 5 = 6.0V, to match the 1.5V x 4 = 6.0V of alkalines. I can't remember which other models has the fifth battery option. SB 26 has a weird but useful feature of a slight DELAY in slave flash mode, which minimises TTL pre-flash problems.
All these flash units as very similar Auto mode performance, I don't think Nikon ever improved on the auto, they focused developing on TTL, D-TTL, I-TTL and CLS instead. Get the most expensive one that you can afford, can't go wrong on that. |
