Rates for food Photography?

Any one here can tell me an average rate for shooting food photography. Moving into food photography also and I was ask for quotation for an assignment, just dowant to spoil market rates.

If u can give in details would be better. Like, 1 dish howmany shots and so on.

This is a local indian food, nasi briani Roti prata etc. PM me if u have to.

JUst make sure its just food photography..and not including Food styling.
Some client assume food photographer does food styling too.

Food styling is a separate profession and should be treated with respect.
Although I am trained and worked as both food photographer and in some food styling, I still never consider myself a food stylist.

Well it depends on the number of dishes you are shooting on the same day and whether its on location.
Fees can range from $50 - over $100 for one dish.

And remember that you still own the full rights of the photograph. If they wanted to own it..it should be even much more expensive.

Always retain your rights
The images can be re-sold in the stock photo market, especially ethnic food.

Usually I will charge around 100 - 200 per dish. Of cos that include styling. Without prints just high res images.

Since you are shooting digital, you shoot more but can give at least
two to three shots of each set up.

Have done Indian local food, it is best to collect at least 50% deposit
before shooting and the rest to be paid on the day of the shoot before
you start shooting. Business is business, what when the client don't
pay the balance and cry fowl that your work is rubbish.

Calculate your time worth. Average is S$200 to S$250 per hour on
such assignment with food styling included, so if you have to shoot
five to ten dishes that would roughly take you more than half a day
if you are doing the food styling yourself. Make sure you have them
sign a contract before you shoot and even though, dirty client still
can stop paying the balacne. Why shoot if they don't respect or
bother to pay you the deposit that is required?

that might not be a good idea...make them select the shot they want, but maybe if they want another shot from same setup, give discount, not FOC...otherwise, one or two extra will become 3, 4, 5, 6...if they are professional about it, they will understand cause they are also in business...

Good info guys. The deal with my client didnt go thru, i guess cause of the "steep price".

Food stylists normally charge by full-day or half-day rates. Which can range anything from $1000-$2500/day.

For all to know,
Those signboard makers are doing the photo taking and packaging it together with their biz.
They would sell food pictures from previous customers to new hawkers,too. They collect plenty of food images and package with their signboard biz.
So Digital Images have make some photographer lost in this food photo biz.

Good Luck to those venturing into food shoot.
