Default 18-50mm f/2.8 EX DC vs SP AF 17-50mm f/2.8 XR Di II LD Aspherical (IF) vs Sigma 17-70

Hi guys, just want to hear your comments on these 3 lenses. For general walkabout shooting and portraits. Which is the most recommended in terms of pic quality, performance and price? The Tamron 17-50 seems more attractive compared to the sigma 18-50, due to the slightly wider 17mm and the cheaper price. Not too sure about the 17-70 except that its not constant f2.8. Thanks..

there's no Sigma 17-70 f/2.8 but there is a 24-70 f/2.8. i have one and like the images i get from it. it also really helps that the aperture is fixed - esp in lower light conditions. the built in flash doesn't reach over lens so u may need to look into getting one.

i can't comment on the others as i haven't used them before but i am happy with my Sigma 24-70. it can attract a bit of attention when walking around because of its size. i can't compare it with the 24-70L (canon user?) either but from what i've read before the colours, sharpness and image quality are within par for the amount u pay compared to the L. the other thing is that this lens focus isn't exactly quiet. not really a big issue to me tho.

the only thing u might miss with the 24-70 is the wide angle, but then u do get the extra 20mm on the other end. i usually find that 24mm is enough for what i do anyway.

hopefully i haven't detracted too much from your original question!

i know it says tamron 17-50 and sigma 18-50. but he also wanted to know about the 17-70 and whether it was a fixed aperture which is why i gave my opinion about the 24-70 f/2.8 because of its closeness to the 17-70 range and fixed aperture. he might just find that it comes in as more his style than the shorter lenses.

Hi really thanks for the feedback on the lenses.. Yup I know the Sigma 17-70 is not constant f2.8, but i am looking at it too coz of its wider range than the other 2 lenses and its cheaper too. The Sigma 24-70 f2.8 is definitely a very gd lens, my friend has it and I can said it produces very sharp and contrasty pics.. The only thing is its not that wide at 24mm, I shoot at 18-20mm very often.. If not will definitely get this lens..

The sigma 18-50 f2.8 is the most ex among the 3 lenses I have listed out. I want to find out if the Tamron 17-50 f2.8 and sigma 17-70 f2.8-4 produces comparable image quality and sharpness. If so I might as well go for them. Trying to look for the best compromise in terms of performance n price..

OT a bit. Perhaps you will like to wait for the Tokina 16-50 f/2.8 if not in a hurry, wider angel (16mm) somemore.

also, there's a new Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 EX DC MACRO, anyone know how is it compare to the non-macro version? Tokina 16-50 f/2.8 seems attractive..
