Default DOF Question

How to make those kind of photo in which most of the object, insect for example is in focus.

I've tried stepping down all the way to f/11, but I didn't notice too much differece, it is because I focus too close?

emphasize on the eyes first
in my humble opinion, the pic is still acceptable generally eventhough the rest of the parts are not so clear provided the eyes are sharp sharp in focus
just my two cents
please correct me if i am wrong
thanks

haha, i tend to disagree with you. In that case, we will be all shooting the eyes not the whole subject

For Macros... use a P&S + close up filters.

A good alternative.

A wide open of F2.8 on my CP4500 has so much DOF than my DLSR+macro lens give me.

eg #2 but would have liked the DOF to be just a little bit more to cover the eyes

yeah. Bro Ortega is shooting eyes most of the time. =) thin razor sharp DOF. Different ppl different style mah.

Anyway, for thread starter. To maximize DOF, go parallel to insect, focus at the eyes and increase f number to about f11 or 13 or even more. Otherwise, step back a little and refocus. Crop to get the image you desire. I think stepping back gives you more DOF but no longer at 1:1 magnification usually. But does it really matter? =p

Good luck shooting. And practicing. I also trying to shoot whole insect sharp but like Ortega, I tend to go for the ICE. OR should I say eyes. hehehehe

actually I use f16-f22 most of the time with my 90mm macro @ approx 1:1.2 otherwise the DOF too thin.

some queries -
so comparing macro lens of 60mm / 105 mm / 180 mm
the 180 one shld be able to provide more DOF because of the longer working distance?
is the difference big enough to be noticeable ? e.g. since 180mm is much more expensive

thanks in advance

The shorter the lens the better DOF you will get, dude.

Imagine the DOF from a WA lens and telephoto lens. Which lens give you better DOF?
