Honestly, social problems aside. Something should be done about this. Attempted suicide/suicide is a crime, it shouldn't be condoned at all. Seriously, I hope that this doesn't
start a trend in which people jump hoping that their family will receive massive donations given blindly by the public.

I'm not an unsympathetic person, but I believe help should be extended to people when they need it immediately. Not wait until something happen then show our sympathy by giving money. It's like hypocrisy, trying to make it up for not extending help when they were still alive. It's a bit of like trying to make ourselves feel good.

Without doubt, there are plenty of poor people still in Singapore. But there are also plenty of reasons why they are poor. Money is not the only solution to the problem.

But to some Singaporean.. money is the root of all their problems. If suiciding means that it can bring in sympathy grants from public, they will do it. Esp if it will help their family.
I am shock to read that the boy wanted to buy a pair of Nike Basketball shoes using the public grants when his father just passed away recently .. And to think that the boy is already 16 yrs old and should already start developing some kind of mature sense.
Our society is rotting... moral values and family ties cant compete with the temptation of a pair of Nike

I am afraid more social prob will arise when IRs start operating.

The boy cannot be blamed. It has got to do with the education he had all his life... from his family. At 16, who he is molded and nurtured by his family, while of course, he should have some "cow sense" by now.

Also, the IR will do nothing to worsen the social problems. As it is, there are "cruises" and Genting Highlands. All we want is for the money to come to us instead.

These are just my personal opinion. Not to start an argument or anything.

It is sad to hear when someone has to take his own life, and while we do not know all the facts (and most likely never will) therefore I rather not speculate. It is definitely something that has driven the person to the end to consider suicide.

I will not even attempt to preach what is right and wrong in here.

Just hoping, like everyone has said, that this will not be a trend.

The CNA report neglected the time of accident.
I think there'll be another spate of deaths due to people 'copying' these.
    Sigh.

Yap, i oso dun wish to start flaming here but I feel IR is more a case of keeping money from flowing out instead..

Not trying to be a preacher of righteous values and stuff. Sometimes, some things in life just dont feel right and i am just voicing them out. No need to agree with me

    If life which is something money could buy;
The rich will live and the poor will die.
    But in fairness the God had make it so;
The rich and the poor together must go.

    Feeling all sentimental yeah?

But that is a fact which many people fail to grasp (me included sometimes). I am glad that I have not come to a point in my life when my trials overcome me. "Why do people fall? So that they can learn to pick themselves up". Sometimes movie lines does help us think.

Movies sometimes are recorded of true past. Sentimental, nay. That's life...... Not all are born equal, some are more equal that others and yet they don't cherish like the example of Ms Wee.

Some would say, ask not what the country can do for you, ask what can you do for the country. But when the country has nothing for you to do, what else can you do for the country?

Like when the Emperor would asked, I build roads and I build houses for people, what merit do I have? Because you are the Emperor, that's your duty to provide these for your people, what merit do you want then?

Suicides are not acccidental, there is intent. I've read somewhere that should the authorities decide to put up a barricade it will be a half height one. Putting a barricade will not deter or decrease 'unnatural' deaths. The determined will scale the barricades and still jump.

A friend of mine hung himself a year ago, leaving a wife and a daughter, easy for him, the family have to live with the stigma.....people would be wondering what kind of wife he had, unless you know the truth, on the other handed, the man who jump and the family received a tidy sum of half a million, prob more than he would ever earned if he lived on....perhaps the press can help by not making headlines out of such cases. These kind of news put ideas into people.

ya... it made it more glamourous to die than to live... wats up man?

if more & more go base jumping on the tracks, i guess i could write a new movie called Suicide Club Singapore... and i'll ask Quentin Tarantino to be director, i love those bloody scenes... esp if there is 1 scene whereby u see a line of middle age man holding hands and jumping at the same time when a SMRT train came crashing.

and i could foresee that u know whos will be giving speech about these people should come look for help and they will have the needs rendered... but then again, which would be better? whole family live in proverty and get a little to help to move along, or 1 person suffer and the rest of the family suddenly had a windfall, as good as getting Toto... minus the .50 or 3.50...

*i know i am crude but thats the way i see it now... more will happen, and nothing is going to deter them unless 'kind hearted people' stop donating. I can't control how you use your money, i also can't control their death, and i certainly am not supporting that everybody should not have a big heart... but look beyond that, the 1st guy might be a genuine case, those that follows are copycats, and somehow may have the NKF effect... it just make everyone so sick of being kind hearted.

Let's not jump to a conclusion that it is because the first case which had collected a big amount, and all cases are copycat.

How much are you willing to give up your life? seriously, even u are desperate and in depression, would you take chance and think public will donate again?

think harder, before jumping a conclusion.. can building a barrier and less negative news reporting can solve the problem?

i wonder if i'm gonna be offtopic. just like there's an increase trend of certain ppl jumping off to the death particularly onto the mrt tracks, i cant help but to think of japanese who are particularly fond of going Mount Fuji to commit suicide.

perhaps we can consider putting signs like "think of your loved ones before you jump" or "treasure your life" to deter more of such tragedies? i am not sure also.. but i dont know if more Singaporeans would actually donate so much anymore. but as for the boy who's buying nike shoes? i dont think there's anything wrong, 'cept perhaps he's been deprived of normal necessities for so long and we don't expect him to mourn forever, right?

    RIP..

It happened around 830pm. I was at tiong bahru station when an announcment came over teh broadcast that I think was meant for staff to hear cos it was coded. It said something like "clementi "numerical code" clementi "numercial code", clementi "numerical code" sorry I cant remember what was teh code.

Have to admit it is most likely a copy cat incident. I mean the other guy's wife got half a million in donations, tax free and more than they can even earn in their lives. It's like striking 4D. Most likely this guy was thinking the same way. And more such incidents will take place, it is not about whether there is sliding doors or not.

eh, dude. it's like asking if any wife would prefer tax-free sudden windfall of half a million bucks, over her hubby. remember, both wives lost their husbands. no amount of money can buy back life.

copy cat or not, it is still a sad thing.
