Default Nikon Dslr's WB

hi I have some questions about WB for Nikon Dslr. I presume Nikon WB is about the same for D50 to D200. Hope u guys can help..

1. Do u mostly use preset WB or the various WB modes on your camera?

2. Is preset WB really necessary? I mean using expodisc or zerocs WB filter to set the preset WB. Or u will use AWB plus some compensation?

3. How u all find the Nikon's AWB? Issit accurate indoor and under mixed lighting?

Set WB to auto since using Nikon Capture.

My experience; AWB is inconsistent if used indoor w/o flash.

never trust the camera to do the white balance settings for you, especially during portrait sessions. if you shoot in JPEG and to correct the skin tone, you'll spend hours looking at your monitor trying to remove red/blue shades from skin tone. different application needs different settings. if you're shooting a building for the mood, then it's ok to shoot with auto white balance.

If shooting NEF.

use NC4.4 to correct the WB.

Hi aaron80, you can use Adobe Lightroom to adjust the white balance, it works well with both JPEG and Raw. You can download the trial version.

i mostly use CLOUDY white balance. i like the warm effect of the skin tone of people with this white balance setting. as much as i want to shoot NEF, i don't have time to convert and adjust the white balance settings of every photo. i do photography as a hobby only

my humble "couple of months" experience with DSLR.....shows that pre-WB is not very useful, only good for still & close up object if u r NOT using flash as this is the only time that u can measure the WB correctly.

Worst scenario...when u switched to pre-WB & forget to switch it back!

I set my D50 to Direct Sunlight when shooting outdoor & under shade.
Never like the Auto because it tend to go toward the cooler side (blue).
For skin tone,,,try adjusting the Hue level toward the positive value.

IIRC you can adjust/fine tuning Auto White Balance to give warmer color.

Sad to said D50 do not have fine adjustment for white balance.
Another reason to upgrade ?

Well.. I guess they are good for the ppl who wish to shoot in available light and get the correct white balance right on the dot (more like the professionals who are doing paid assignments)

The rest of us get by with RAW or AWB...

one more thing to buy/break/lose/fumble while you should instead be paying attention to getting the shot right...

try a white pringles cap...there was a thread somewhere in CS that demontrates its effectiveness...and you get your carb/sodium boost as well

Then you can use NC to alter White Balance in post processing. Or, you can preset WB with slightly blue color paper to bring warmer color to the photo.

Arto.
