Default CPL filters

Need to clear my confusion

is it possible to use a CPL filter that's bigger or smaller than the size of the len?

Say, using a 77mm CPL filter on a 58mm len or 58mm CPL filter on a 55mm len..is it not advisable?

can anyone help? Thks
