Hmmm...I believe overall D80 is better, but people's preferences differ, some may like the feature of 400D, some mayb not.

Summary of Verdict - where Canon fell behind. Round 1: Design - 400D is too light. 'Serious lenses' will put it out of balance. Round 2: Features - 400D lacks a spot meter. Round 3: Accessories - D80 has CLS commander. Round 4: Performance - D80 is overall faster but 400D has a faster flash recycle time. Round 5: Photo Quality - They tie. I have been using a Canon for sometime (n a Canon supporter), but looking at some specs, I will say D80 thumbs over 400D in some aspects.. especially spot meter n 11AF.
Noise control n warmer colour (for some preference) of the D400 lord D80. For people who are thinking either of the one, do a readup, and see your budget, plus feel. Both are good cameras in their own end.

Hey guys, though I may not be agreeable to passing a strict verdict of which cam is better, but I am just reminding all that of cos the man behind the viewfinder is important, but this is talking about comparing cam, so please take it with the assumption that the man behind the viewfinder is the same man holding and testing the two cams....so the man factor is nullified, cancelled.
Ok, I stressed again, I am not for any cam, just to point out this is for cam comparison alone.

Yah, the man matters, but if the same man with better equipment will have better performance mah, right? I mean there will be less limitation constraining the man shooting what he wants to, for example faster response of the cam, more AF points...
So this thread is for equipment comparison loh...adding "man in the loop" will complicate the comparison issue...

it is the man who know his tools well in order to use it well. if you cannot control less AF points what makes you think more AF points is better? you (the man) will need to decide how when to use it. so unless you have reached that level of understanding, i'd suggest you upgrade your skills first b4 measuring every aspect of other cameras. will you be changing systems, if not then it should not matter what the other camera can or cannot do. unless you are trying to bait some canon users for a flame war

No, I am just trying to de-link the man from the comparison....not siding any camera brand....if you do engineering testing, having less parameters will give you the actual effect of that particular parameter you want to measure. In this case, we are measuring the performance of the camera and not the man behind the viewfinder.
So in this case we are assuming the man behind the viewfinder is the same man using the 2 cams for comparison....so lets assume that a guru of photography who is able try out all aspects of the cam is testing the cam, then, the factor of the man behind the viewfinder is not an influencing factor anymore....you get what I mean? I stress again, I am not siding any brand or model of camera....

Not I like to measure lah.....just that this thread is about the diff of 2 cams, not the person.....
For example, if I tell you I am going to give you either a D50 and D2Xs, which will you choose? Which one will help you more in taking good picture under all kind of circumstances? So, this is the difference of the camera alone I am talking about loh. I know D50 is a good cam, but D2Xs must have better performance to be in the better class loh...... Disclaimer: I am not saying I am good, definitely I am a newbie who cant get "wow" pic even with the best of camera system in the world. So, any cam to me is a challenge to learn all its function.
