What is the typical shutter speed you used for a 50mm F1.8 on a 350D to prevent blurr due to handshake?
Understand a good way to determine the min shutter speed can be done using 1/2xfocal length. For a 50mm F1.8 on a 350D or 400D, the theorectical shutter speed is 1/2x50x1.6 = 160. Do you follow this method closely? |

i can get pretty decent shots at 1/60.
how you do you define sharpness in this case?

Depends on what effect you want to achieve. There's no 'typical' shutter speed. ISO, shutter speed, f/stop, all comes into play.
I do follow the focal lenth theory though...

i try to go faster than 1/60s.
sometimes the blur is not due to handshake but the aperture being too wide open and the focus is pin-sized. ![]() |

yes yes. so small that when i take photos of my cat, one eye sharp the other eye blur...
now i try to step it down to at least f/2.2. use higher iso setting in order to get 1/60s min. switch on all the lights at home. ![]() |

try 5.6, the best range for the 1.8. it is just so sharp!

i use the f/1.8 when in low light. when i have no choice. i will usually step above f/2.2 same as babykailan and also try to maintain a shutter of at least 1/60.
unless i wanna play with the dof. thats a diff case. haha.

i dun follow the focal length theory at all, just the mirror bounce will become visible below 1/10 handheld.
if your hand holding techniques are used properly, i gotten shots from 1/13 and above quite nicely (with the 50mm 1.4). break rules to achieve new heights, ppl say this and that, at the end you have to keep shooting and try it for yourself, i broken 'focal length' rules all the time with lenses shorter than 135mm. Anything longer i have not use extensively to comment.

Since the 50mm f/1.8 doesn't allow me to zoom in/out at all, therefore I have to move myself instead right? I find myself sometimes holding the camera in awkward positions to capture that shot.
Such positions don't allow me to have good breathing technique or handling of the camera body, so I try to use 1/60sec and faster to minimize camera shake. |

Depending on posture, generally, 1/60 is a comfortable handheld shutter speed. After awhile, if you get more comfortable with slightly slower speeds, you can drop down to 1/50, 1/40, 1/30, and even as slow as 1/15. It all depends on posture, breathing and handling.

Usually at such shorter focal length lenses, it's possible to handhold at shutter speeds of up to 1/10 sharp.

1/30 to 1/60 will be comfortable.

I thought the rule of thumb is 1/ƒ not 1/2ƒ? Last edited by hwchoy; 14th November 2006 at 03:48 PM. |
