Hi All,
I'm considering getting this unit in place of the kit lens I'm getting from 400D. Has anyone used it? Please give me your comments. The price according to one of the posting is about 600 plus. I think it should be a reasonable price if the quality of its pics are not that bad. Ok, awaiting all your advice. |

One of the walk about lens i am considering previously, and still considering.
I have a 28-135 Canon with IS, but this sigma gives you pretty wide at 17mm, useful. This lens scored abt 88pts in one of the magazine not too long ago. Quality definitely not that bad. (if u mean its not that lousy) Web publishing and printing up to A3 should still gives you very sharp pics. BUt then there are ppl who are self indulgence in being a L-holic, who will ask you to get a L lens. There is another canon but not L, 17-85 with IS. Also another fine piece of optics.

Ya, know about the Canon 17-85, but mainly read online that it's not really worth the value though it works as a good walk-around. The aperture starts at f4.5, also another minus. Think I'll wait and see more opinions before deciding.

No worries. =) I got it second hand for $520. It was a new lens though, the seller (who's a nice guy, so I didn't mind at all!) sold it off only after two weeks from his purchase. I'm not sure if you can get it for $400 as per what the previous poster mentioned, perhaps you might! Just have to scout around a bit. (I didn't get that kinda luck though.) As for AF speed, I have no issue with it. Like all lenses, it hunts at the longest tele range, but even then it's acceptable. The AF speed will be faster than the IS (image stabilisation) lenses when IS is turned on (for obvious reasons). At the wide end, it's fast and quiet (perhaps not as quiet as the USMs but certainly not an issue at all for me!) I got it for a general purpose travel lens. 17's a pretty good wide angle (I take landscape and architecture), and 70's enough most of the time - at least while I save up for a longer zoom lens! Cheers, hope this helps. Yours truly, |

Hey yo guys,
Think I'll most likely go for this one. Had a bad experience with a 2nd hand lens before so gonna go for the 1st hand. Where would be the best place to scout for a 2nd hand lens by the way other than e-bay? |

My brother has this lens for d70. I must say that it is quite amazing... you will be even more amazed at how close this bugger can focus. Seriously... focusing is sharp. Pictures taken are nice in colours as well as sharp. Although it is not constant 2.8 but I feel since you are considering it, you can actually try it out. I suspect you will like it.
It is quite light as well, yeah. just that the zoom rings are in reverse order.. ![]() |
