Default Flash noob question

May I ask how do I make use of the infra red to focus,
without the flash firing when I press the shutter?

infrared - flash - focus? it doesn't link together... can i know what camera are you using?

opps sorry
i was talking abt the 580ex

with the flash unit mounted, focusing is easier coz of the infra from the 580ex?

turn to master mode, disable flash from firing, and use a dark box to cover the flash head to cover up the pre-flash (you can't disable the pre-flash IIRC.)
