Just wondering if there are still many people using this so called, 1-Dinosaur. There have been a few people looking for one over the past months. I switched from my 20D against the advice of many of my friends, but generally has been quite pleased with it.

I have printed up to A3 size without any trace of pixelation....though not sure for larger prints, though not as versatile in low lighting condition, I feel it produces better pictures than my 20D in terms of details, but tends to be intolerent towards cropping due to its low MP.

congratulations on your new purchase!
i believe with the 1D you can learn even better composition techniques, since you have limited crop area. continue to shoot and explore!

Still waiting in deep anticipation for mine, which I should see by tuesday!
The reduced 'leeway' for cropping is a potential problem since the pixel count is already so low, but I'm thankful that I hardly, if ever, crop my images anyway and try to get it right before I shoot. And if what you say is right, then I'd be very happy with the 1D. So far I haven't printed anything larger than an A4 yet, and even then that is very rare. |

Yes, I read about this too...the 1D apparently makes batteries bleed, and fast. I'll have plenty of spares though, so I hope that will suffice.

it's not as bad as many said. I was able to finish a basket ball match with 1 batt, ard 400 shots.
The noise isn't as bad as i expected too... at iso1000 it is not an issue... here are some shots from FM where the photographer shot in iso3200... looks good to me! http://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/468107 |

Guess need to look into getting a faster lens, the 3.5-5.6 on my 28-300 would be a limitation for indoor situation, need to consider IS too as the weight would be an issue even at faster shutter setting.
In any case I feel its an affordable entry into the world of 1 series.....I am hanging on to mine for now. Last edited by Danntbt; 29th October 2006 at 02:56 PM. |

Actually I don't think its an issue of the camera.
U shld ask, "Can the Photographer still hold up?"

I think you like what you see is most important, everything else doesn't matter. Photography can be very subjective, so ...
All this comparison is pointless, keep shooting ![]()

But in view of the modern entry level dslr coming into the market, can this camera cut it at the same price level. |

The feel of a good body in the hand only the beholder can appreciate! I have a D30, price depreciated too much to let go ... pitty but it IS a good body with ISO1600. Only a bit difficult to focus in deem light. I suppose 1D is much better.

absolutely... what you lose in terms of absolute resolution you gain in so many other areas
- speed - build - auto focus - larger brighter viewfinder - 1.3x crop (might work, might not work for you) - built in vertical grip what I'd say makes this camera really shine is its weak Anti-Aliasing filter, so its images are beautifully sharp straight out of the camera with little sharpening. and since its just 4 Megapixels, I'd suggest shooting RAW - doesn't take up that much space... and you can convert and bring out the best in the images from this half a decade old camera while it loses in terms of resolution today, it pretty much hasn't lost ground yet in many other areas. if you are not going to print larger than 12 x 18 inches... I'd say, just keep it and focus instead on your photography. |

weakness of the 1D:
1.battery life not good. get the markII if budget allows 2.heavy 3.images start to get noisy at ISO 800 and above pros of the 1D: 1. ergonomics 2. colour accuracy 3. 1.3x is good enough for wide angle even with 28mm lens attached. 4. very fast AF |

Con #3 is debatable. I didnt mind using it above ISO800 when I had a set to try out. Would be nice if there are good 3rd party batteries that would last longer than 500 shots.

my one personal dislike of the body is the way the 1 series functions are programmed such that u need to press 2 or more buttons to do anything with it. Its too much of a nuisance if u ask me. Currently using both a 1dmk2 (work) and 20D (personal) and much prefer my 20D. The AF speed and buffer of the 1dmk2/1d is undebatable though.
