A combined Malaysian and Indonesian brigade level (or was it division level?) army exercise held in Johor which co-incided with our National Day.

It's an exercise happened close to our national day in 1991, and was a strong political message and test.

Alot of stuff still are under wraps, but can say that everything was "live".

Ex Malindo Barsasa 3AB was a series of joint miltary exercises between Indonesia and Malaysian armed forces that started a week before Nday 1991 and cumulated in the form of an commando/Kopassus airborne drop in Johor not less 20 km from our border. Total strength involved hovered around 3000 men.

The official TNI newspaper stated that the scenario of the exercise was that an"aggressor" had invaded Malaysia and hence both countries are forced to carried out punitive measures to defend Malaysia and drive the "aggressors" out. The codename of the last phase of the exercise was translated from Behasa Melayu as "Beat to Death"

I thought it was on National Day itself, it was a large (div minus I think) para-landing exercise in Johore. And so we mobbed.

My unit weren't mobilised as we were only into our 3rd in-camp so not "seasoned" enough.

It was a large scale exercise that had 5000 troopers.

If I recall, we also had one exercise for political sake too.
