Thread: Which 70mm-300mm is better? Tamron or Sigma?

    I own a tamron, dropped it twice...heavily.
Except fer some scratches, it escaped unscathed.
Image is sharp but getting softer towards the rear end.
Downside is that AF is reallie slow plus the rotating front element is a bother.
But fer the price is no HORSE RUN!

I started buying PP 2 years ago. Still have most of the issues with me. So far I think it's still the best mag although I can't say that I've really read many others. Quite hard to find though. I'll try to do a scan later.

I've had bad experiences with Sigma, but that was when I used their products over a decade ago (anyone got the SA-300N film SLR??). It wasn't so much of their products, but their after-sales service. Quite horrible.

But now, I think their products have improved by a lot, even though I've read of certain QC issues like lenses not working properly out of the box. But when they do work, they work quite well.

I've got the Sigma 70-300. No complaints, except that it's not internal-focusing, which makes the camera balance a bit off and handling a bit awkward.

I've own Sigma 70-300mm f4-5.6 APO DG macro (red ring latest version Nikon mount), the IQ is good in my opinion. Here is some of my older work when i first got my lens.

Here are some pics taken with the latest Sigma 70-300 APO DG. Most pics are taken wide open. Pics are largely uncropped. Closeups are done with the macro function.

I think between Tamron and Sigma, you can't really go wrong as it is a budget telephoto.

Heh. Seeing how this thread is progressing, opinion is pretty much split down the middle. Basically there's little to choose between the two, since they are both in the same class. I guess it will depend on your gut feeling.

Buy either one, mount it on your camera, and enjoy shooting. No need to stress.

Price of tamron = $220 (ms, must order)
Price of sigma = $320~$350 (can be found everywhere)

I own neither, so cannot comment on IQ and AF, but i reckon the price is enough to make a decision.

Well, seems like both Tamron and Sigma are equally liked by so many of you... Then I think I not need to worry much on which on to get...

Ha ha. Exactly what i suggested to Alvinz as well. Save up and get something more useful then you won't have to lose $$$ when u try to sell off the 70-300 to upgrade in the future.

Roughly around $1000 bah, depending on the condition. According to my 2 friends who bought this lens. That's the older version btw. AF isn't as fast but some say they are actually sharper than the AF-S VR version.
