what kind of engineering your refer to?

software engineer, hardware engineer, civil engineer, structure engineer, QA engineer, electrical engineer, mechanical engineer, electronic engineer, chemical engineer, biochem engineer, QC engineer, customer service engineer, project engineer, service engineer, technical support engineer.......................etc.... so many... which one?

basically those which mainly invovles around physics and not that other 2 sciences. right now, i am the stage where i have to decide what to study and work. i really really love physics, both therotical and practical(engineering), but i find myself more inclined to theory so i actually want to study pure physics overseas and graduate with phd(as getting a bachalor in pure physics is pretty useless as compared to a bacholr in finance or other stuffs). but i am just afraid other jobs opportunity cos other than being a lecturer/researcher/teacher, there isn't much other choices i can have with a physics degree. so is it wiser to take a more pragmatic approach and study engineering(mechanical, civil and other physics related ones)? not that i dun like engineering, but it's just i favour theoretical more.

can be a researcher mah .... since you like physics so much .... maybe can come out with some new theory or physics law .....

Definitely your path would end up as a researcher.

Physic is only a very general term which will break up to 4 main core of engineering which i can think of right now. They are civil engineering, electrical engineering, electronic engineering and mechanical engineering. These 4 engineering which will break up into many other forms of engineering which are consider specialised field.

If you end up doing Bac of Phyics, you most likely end up like a teacher. If you end up doing engineering, you most likely end up.................... no where..... honestly.... engineering in singapore is saturated.....

you mean engineering(the physics related ones) is quite hard to find a job in singapore now?

it is true that physics is a very wide area, but it is not entirely true that with BSc (bac of Sc in physics) will ends u up in research. BSc is just to equip u with a basic paper qualification to find a job.

if u are interested in pure physics (pure physics = theoretical), then your path will be fixed - that being a reseacher(MSc) & a lecturer (MSc / PhD).

with a BSc in physics, u will stand a higher chance in semiconductor field, IC design & wafer fabrication.
u can also venture into electrical or electronics etc, but u need to take some specific major papers.

just to entice you, some of the exciting branch of physics are quantum physics, lasers, astrophysics, solid states, optics, waves & vibration, electromagnetic, statistical physics, atomic & molecular physics, relativity physics, radiations, digital & microprocessors, plasma physics... etc.

on the recognition aspect, in this part of the world (asia), engineering qualification is rated higher than physics.
at the other side, once u tell ppl that u hold a BSc in physics, u r valued and respected. strange, but it is true.

anyway, a degree is just a basic paper qualification. u may not ended doing what u studied.
i hv 2 friends who did BSc & MSc in Math (for some, math is suckkkks...)
one is ended up in an insurance company, pay is 2.5x my pay by just sitting in office (not selling insurance).
another is working in genting group, just need to crack his head to come up with new gaming strategy, starting pay was 2.5kUSD few years ago.

but some are giving tuition & some are working in stock broking company.

so study HARD and spend less time getting HARD in sggirls.

wow. thanks for the long post. so if i do take my most favourite path, which is physics all the way to theortical physics, the danger of not being able to find a job.....is it high, say in the current status of the world?

Whether can you find a job is not solely base on your paper qualification. There are other factors that hiring company consider too. Don't worry about finding a job now. Concentrate on your study and get the paper first. One step at a time.

how good are u in maths? if u are so so, i suggest u to drop that idea.
w/o strong foundation in maths, theoretical physics will be very difficult.
imagine u need to use laplace/fourier transformation, gamma functions, legendre polynomials & etc day in day out esp for theoretical physics (eg quantum physics).

Ya...... quantum physics is a nightmare.... also same for electrical.... imagine you are told to derive V=RI or P=VI and these two are the fundamental formula in electrical and electronics.

still got ODE and PDE.... this is a nightmare.....
