hi,
to canon users out there, canon has have USM and IS in the lenses much earlier than nikon has AFS and VR. would like to ask you guys, does USM or IS tends to fail after some time and needs to be replaced? i guess canon users has a longer dealing USM and IS thus can provide a better experience. thanks! |

I have had a 15 year old Canon 28-105mm USM lens that was still working at the point of time when I sold it.
As with all moving parts there will be a finite service life. Therefore it will fail eventually like it or not. A regular autofocus motor instead of a HSM/USM/SSM/SWM focusing motor will still fail given enough working life. Same goes for the IS modules - however that is an added feature, and added features tend to mean added likelihood for failure. Canon's IS lenses have been known to become completely inoperable should the IS module become faulty. |

All mechnical parts will undergo a wear and tear period. I dont know of any specific data of how long it will last you before failure because mileage varies from user to user. Like what evenstar mentioned, it will last you a long time if you take good care of your equipment. When it fails, there's Canon Harbourfront which will service your lens at a reasonable cost. Hope that helps.
