Pictures of Underwater World in Sentosa

Yesterday went to the Underwater World in Sentosa, toke some picture using my D50+18-135 len(D80 kit len)+built in flash. and found 90% of the picture is all blur. if the flash used, the picture was messed by the reflect light of the glass. if no flash, then the face of the man will be very dark as the blakgroud is very bright (fish tank is lighted inside).

Is a more power bounced flash is the way to this kind of situlation. Appreciate all the advice. Thanks.

you need to push your iso up up up
also best to go on a sunny day as the noon day sun will light up the BG
and use fill flash to light up the subjects (people)

be careful of reflections of your flash

I think sun light can't enter Underwater World

Up your ISO.

Or you can try slow sync (read the manual for more information on this). However, be careful of camera shake because the shutter speed can be quite slow.

slow sync ?? cannot la... the fish swimming about will have doubling effect on the fishes tails....

movement is everwhere... u will have to up ur shutter speed and up ISO.

and the dome material is reinforced acrylic... so if u flash directly u will not acheive much and u also blind the fish temporary.. or worse.... u damage the fishese eyes...

Hi, all,really fast reply.
Some future explanation:
1. did not notice if the sunlight can come in or not. yesterday is a cloudy day. but even the fish tanks can be lighted by sun, the face of people stand before the fist tanks is still dark dark.
2. Try slow sync, the fish was moving while the shutter was open. so... blur the image.

Anyway, thanks for all the reply and keeping my mind for more good idea.

Could you please elaborate what's the "fill-in flash", and how to set up. newbie here...

With all the glass, i dun think you can get a good shot with no reflection if you are using built in flash. Either shoot without flash @ high ISO, or ext bounced flash may work. The former is preferred.

up the iso, use a monopod. Because in that kind of lightings, i doubt u can handhold and shoot without handshake.

what equipment do you have?

do 50 set the iso as high as you can accept
this will bring up the shutter speed to an aceptable hand holding speed (monopod even better)
zoom your lens to desired, go one round and do a test shoot without flash
aperture should be as big as there is enough DOF (use the wide end of your lens)
but remember that your built in flash can only cover so much

once you have the ideal exposure to take a well exposed shot of the bg
remember the exposure and switch to M mode
then you pop up your flash
set it to slow sync rear curtain.

take a test shot with subject (people)
remember that the flash will be reflected so position yourself
so that the reflection will be as little as possible (experiment you have an LCD to check)
if too bright/dark then -/+EV for the flash

IIRC even the giant tank is artificially lighted.

They can't allow the water temperature and salinity to be affected by weather.
