Sigma 17-70 2.8/4.5
or Tamron 18-50? I've got an EOS 400D kit, and my problems with the kit lens was its softness. I don't mind not having the extra 20mm range between 50 and 70. Any suggestions? Cheers. |

is it soft because your hands shakes or the kit is that bad?

Thanks for the recommendations guys.
Yeah, did stop down a couple of stops, it's especially soft when it comes to night photography, with a tripod and self timer. Daytime shots are fine, but still lacks the sharpness especially at the edges. I hope my hands aren't shaking too badly yet - I'm only 23! ![]() |

i am only 26 end i found the same problem. i found the softness is due to the shake, even a little makes a big deal. i zoomed in to my pic and found 2 images overlaping one and other. i need more train

Typically if you want to test the lens, try propping it up on something or using a tripod. You can't really test for sharpness handholding a lens unless you know for sure that you've got a good steady hold OR you're in fantastically bright light shooting at high speeds of 1/500 and above. Personally I'd pick the Sigma because of the 1:2.3 macro function. Pretty nifty.

Thanks for the suggestion though! Guess I'm quite set on it. The extra range (albeit small) won't be too bad either. |

Maybe you could consider Sigma 18-50mm F2.8.

Hi.
I am a 350D newbie user, last weekend i tried shooting night shots with my kit lens without tripod. Looks fine. I am also considering a kit lens replacement for awhile, but someone knock me on my head, tht i should experiment with the kit lens to it's limit then think of a replacement lens. See my photo. ![]() Last edited by yZong; 27th October 2006 at 03:31 PM. |

Since you mentioned that the difference in focal length is not important to u, u Should go for the Tamron because of the constant f2.8.
Constant f2.8 will allow u to take shots that would be difficult on the other lens. Eg playing with DOF, faster shutter speed etc |

If ur hand shake alot... Then all u need is a tripod n a shutter remote then
