Default Leopard Lacewing

Sharing 2 shots of the Leopard Lacewing.

One specimen of the butterfly was first seen and recorded on Western Singapore on 13 Dec 05 , another butterfly was last seen on 7th June 06 at Upper Seletar Reservoir Park.

Have the good fortune of encountering 3 of them today on a field off Old Jurong Road.

With this encounter , it appears that the butterfly has established itself on the Island.

Cethosia cyane cyane (Leopard Lacewing)

Thanks bro tltan,

I am using a Canon 20D + Tamron 180 mm Macro + 580 EX for fill-flash, handholding most of the time, rarely have a chance to use even my monopod .

waohz, such sharp shots of the butts handholding! good skills. I cant even hold my 90mm without handshake (sad...must be too much coffee, lack of sleep.....etc...etc..EXCUSES ALL!) hahahaha.

Thanks for sharing. I am starting to like the beauty of butts. But 90mm might be a lil too short for them.

regards,

And here is a record shot of a male Leopard Lacewing taken in the shade at low shutter speed on the vicinity where the 2 females were shot , thought it was a Malay Lacewing till taken a closer look today and IDed it as a male of the butterfly.

Update :

The Leopard Lacewing was first sighted and recorded on end 2005 in Singapore , it ranges from India, throughout Southeast Asia, and south to Papua New Guinea.

After the first lone female that was sighted on Dec 05, the second instant when it was sighted was on mid June 06 at Upper Seletar Reservoir Park and it was another lone female .

A colony of the butterfly has just being discovered in the western part of Singapore last week .The hostplant for the butterfly in Singapore has been identified as Passiflora foetida with the sighting of Leopard Lacewing caterpillars feeding on the leaves of the vine during the last 2 days.

This dazzling butterfly exhibits strong sexual dimorphism. Females feature wing patterns with a gray or white background, whereas the upper surfaces of the males are a bright orange. Both sexes are sprinkled with blackish-blue spots and lining veins.

The caterpillars of the lacewing butterfly feed on the leaves of flowering vines in the genus Passiflora and sequester defensive phytochemicals from the plant.

Consequently, the larvae and adult butterflies display a distinct warning coloration that advertises their unpalatable nature to potential predators. When handled, they often exude a noxious odor generated from the ingested passion vine organic compounds.

Sharing another 2 shots of the Male butterfly and a 4-5th instar caterpillar taken today.
