Hi sandman and lim,
The trek, summit day, is slightly harder than the trek from mesilau to laban rata, kinabalu. The cost of the trip is about the same. Air tickets to Hanoi, about $200 Train to Sapa, the town where you start the trek, about US $10, one way. Trek fee, US $250, for group of 5. Includes 1 guide and 2 porters, all meals, tents, basically everything during the trek. The trek is 3 days 2 nights. I went there during dec 2005, temperature dropped to 0 degree celsius at night but that period is dry. You can see more photo of the trek here, in the Vietnam folder. http://www.flickr.com/photos/sweecheng |

Hi oneheart,
In my opinion, Halong bay is not as nice as Sapa n Hanoi. A day trip or 2D1N would be enough, don't take the 3D2N package. When i was in the bay, i got bored after 2 hours, because the sceneries are similar and don't have much variations. I like Fansipan, Sapa and Hanoi very much! Have fun : ) I have uploaded pictures of Hanoi, Sapa and Halong bay onto flickr account. You can take a look. http://www.flickr.com/photos/sweecheng |

You've got very nice macro pics!
U took them with a macro lens? I'm too poor to get one, thinking of getting a close up filter but my fren said better not as the quality is really bad.. what is ur opinion? should i get a polariser too? i wonder if i'll need it in vietnam as i'll prob be taking lots of landscape.. |

i must say that although i didn't like the sky color and find a generally underexposed view, the composition from which only possible after climbing so high is breathtaking, with the details on the mountain on the front, the stick that gives a scale and the cloud that flows over the curve of the mountains - awesome. and no amount of photographic skills is able to allow me to do that unless i can be there, without panting like a dying dog.

Hi oneheart,
I think Hanoi is much better than HCMC. It is a much older city, has more heritage, more beautiful. Get a macro lens if you can afford one. A canon or nikon macro len, 100mm, would cost close to a $1000. I have a canon macro 100mm and used to own a tamron macro 90mm. The tamron 90mm macro lens is almost as good and cost less than $600. The build is not as good and the focusing as slower but the picture quality is almost the same, i think. The jellyfish picture was taken with a nikon 995 when the jellyfish was near the water surface. I have a polariser. It does make the colour of the sky more saturate and cut off the reflections of the water but i seldom use it, maybe 1 in 100 landscape shots. Hi Nngtran, Hope you have fun in Sapa too. Hi zoossh, Thanks for the comments. I wished the sky colour could be nicer and some parts of the mountains could have more light but there was really nothing i could do. If i increase the exposure, the clouds and the mountain in front would be overexposed, which, i think cannot happen and wouldn't be nice. Yes, i was blessed to be there to see this breathtaking view. |
