I assure you the image quality is superb. It take TCs fairly well too.
I occasionally use mine with a 2x TC even.

Try one out and you will understand
70-200vr is the best of both world. I should be more specific. I'm refering to 18-200VR and 80-200 2.8.

As I know that lense's deprecation isnt very high, so I thought i may as well go ahead with a 80-200 2.8 lense. And perhaps maybe at the end of next year, i can afford a 70-200vr.
Because I used a S3is from canon, 18-200VR will give me a reminiscence feeling; convenience and VR. But, I'm trying to convince myself tha the purpose of changing to dSLR is to get higher quality picture, not better convenience.

if u think that u intend to invest in a 70-200 next year. why not hold ur purchase and go straight for it...

like that u wun waste money buying the 80-200 and lose money after selling it...

low cost and sharp image...sigma 70-200

mid cost and sharp image...nikkor 80-200

high cost and sharp image...nikkor 70-200

I give the sigma one a thumbs up...low cost and sharp image...

not much real difference in sharpness if u compare the 80-200 & VR 70-200...u won't go wrong with either.

Actually for convenience why not try the much cheaper 28-200 from nikon?
I havent used 1 b4, but fr feedback on forums it seems decent.

Dun forget with a dslr u can easily use iso400, compared to just iso100 on the S3IS.
One thing though, lenses like the 80-200 n 70-200 are cumbersome. The weight of 1 of these lenses is already 3x the weight of the S3IS

The weight of 70/80- 200 is really heavy. I saw quite a few ppl selling this lense, as many claimed it cumbersome and under utilised.

I just tested the 18-200 VR. I think its quite sharp leh. Actually, I cant find fault for it. Maybe I haven really try the 70/80-200 lense. Maybe its sharper?

    there is actually.
    the 1 touch, 2 touch AF-D. 2 touch AF-S.
those are all F2.8 w/o VR
