#1 n #4 looks OOF. The eyes of the flies aer not clear. Where is yr focal point?

Love the composition of #4, but maybe can rotate clockwise a little so the horizontal is horizontal?

Watch out for focus on the eyes. Try shooting at f8.0 to get a bit more DOF. I like the smooth backgrounds.

As cerebrus pointed out, use the max apeture for greater DOF. Only your 3rd pic uses F8. The eyes also need to be more in focus.

Also, try to take parallel to the camera plane (like #3) so that whole body appear sharp.

Thank for your advise celebrus and tchuanye but i have been trying very hard to capture the detail of the eyes but cannot make it. Even spot metering and the focus was moved to the eyes but still a good eye capture was not caught. Can you two give me more advise on it?

Spot metering has nothing to do with focusing. It just meters the area where the spot is being defined....i.e take that for the camera metering computation.

For focusing, try to use MF. Fix the focus and with the camera held firmly, sway the body slowly to and fro. When the image (eyes) appear sharp, take the shot. Needs practice, and will have many missed shots, but hope a few will turn out.

For the DCR 250, set your focus to infinity. Then move the camera towards and away from the subject. You will have to shoot a few shots and pick the best ones. I find that auto focus does not really work right most of the time in situations like this. Happy shooting!

Thanks cerebrus i will try to adopt what you have mentioned. one more qn. the shot taken is on a tripod and the subject was zoom in so as to have a magnified look. is this explain why my subjects eyes were all blur and OOF?

You have to get into the sweet spot...the region where the subject is in the sharpest focus of the close up lens. By zooming in, does not guarantee that the subject is at the sweet spot....thats why the swaying to and fro will let you find where the sweet spot is.

Even so, with AF, the AF may not focus on the parts that your want...e.g. body, or other parts. So sway the camera, and choose the part that you want (eyes mainly ) to be sharp and take it when is appears so in the LCD.
