I saw G7 in Alan Photo yesterday, at SGD 880.- (without bargaining).
Overall, pretty fast start up and response, smaller than the previous Gs, nice black retro look, and no lens cap Will bring my SD card, and try it out one day... I've been looking for compact with hot shoe (already have Canon flash), and good movie capability (very important for me). So far G7 is the best choice. I hate the pixel increase, I wish they stick with 6-7 Mp with better noise profile. But well, let's see how good is G7 at ISO 400 (I don't expect more than a good ISO 400). No RAW is another drawback, but I can live with it (I love RAW though ).Waiting for the reviews now For those who has tried and have sample pics, please post here Thanks! ![]() |

Ya...I would have preferred a cleaner pic at high ISO at 6-8MP than a noisier pic at 10MP. I do miss the flip screen of the G6 though.
I did try it out at Funan. The image at ISO 800 looked a bit noisy, but I did not compare it with the 350D. If it is anything close to the 350D, it would be interesting. |

Sorry, I did not have any CF card with me. I just tried it out on their CF card. You can pop over and try it out.

One ISO 400 sample here: http://www.dcresource.com/reviews/ca.../gallery.shtml, not very outstanding.

No noticeable noise? There is only 1 pic taken at ISO 400 and that is the indoor church shot. Click on the link "View Full Size Image" and take a look at the centre of the pic somewhere near the bottom, around the grey area where the lady in white is sitting.
The link to the actual image is: http://www.dcresource.com/reviews/ca...w/IMG_0014.JPG I was hoping that the noise level would be a bit better than this at ISO 400. Low noise levels are important to me as I like to take indoor shots without flash e.g. indoor sports |

Scale down version...
http://www.dcresource.com/reviews/ca...MG_0014-pp.JPG Full-size is found in gallery... http://www.dcresource.com/reviews/ca.../gallery.shtml I like the Powershot S3 IS, but I also like the G7 with hotshoe. Cant decide which so am willing to wait for new models... Last edited by YogiBear; 24th October 2006 at 07:35 PM. |

Regarding the 10Mp noise issue, here is my thought...
We know that by reducing the resolution, we can reduce the noise as well. Let say, we can do some noise reduction on the 10Mp file, and then reduce the resolution to let say 6Mp. Then it will look like a nice 6Mp picture. Or... Canon can just put a low noise 6Mp CCD on G7, and the result might be just as good as the 6Mp file above (reduced from 10Mp with some noise reduction). Which one will you choose? Well the 6Mp save the hassle of post processing high ISO file, but for low ISO, low noise file, let say ISO 80 file, which one you will choose, the 10Mp file or the 6Mp file? You will get more detail on the 10Mp file for large printing So I think that's Canon approach. 10Mp sensor. If you feel it noisy in high ISO, then just apply some noise reduction and reduce the resolution Rather than to use low noise low resolution sensor. At least at the low ISO, you get more resolution with 10Mp What do you think? |

But is the image at ISO 1600 acceptable? Or do we need to do a lot of post-processing on it? My consideration for this camera is the availability of high ISO and the hotshoe for flash add-on. Add the dimensions which seems to be only a bit bigger than the A series, it's a good candidate for a travel camera.

Here is my try...
The picture of the cathedral, I applied some dust&scratches and despecle in PS, and then resize to 6Mp. Seems not as good as my 6Mp F11 G7 10Mp and 6Mp Comparison But need more sample to justify. More samples: http://www.flickr.com/photos/jomatt/...7594336984889/ |
