    It's tough living in Singapore ...
    Really? Well, my friend drove @ 72km/hr on a 40km/hr road he was caught by a speed trap. He was promptly issued a penalty notice which slapped him with the following punishment;

    1. A$285 Fine (equi to SGD$342)
    2. Immediate 1 month ban from driving
    3. 4 Demrit Points

    I would like to think that what we have in place here is still relatively reasonable and of course, it is wrong in the first place to speed or break traffic rules anyway...

    I was in a VERY SMALL town called Crestone in Colorado. To me, the houses were like "miles" apart from each other. Roads were almost empty.

    My friend lent me a car to drive, with warning that even in such remote roads, one cannot exceed 30 mph. Strictly not more than 30mph, even if you were the only driver on the road.

    I was not told of the penalty, but the strictness was quite amazing.

    Exactly... and that is why i say, we do have people who bemoan the state's strict laws but it is actully, alot more stringent out there. As it is, the degree of "strictness" is all relative anyway.

    May i suggest we keep this discussion on topic instead of going off tangent? I see no reason why snide remarks like these have to be made.

    Thank you.

    Why is it tough to live in a place where the police are trying to make the roads safe for all users? If you follow the traffic rules, what have you got to fear? Are any of the above traffic rules draconian or unreasonable? You prefer the Malaysian system where every major public holiday there is carnage on the highways?

    What on earth has this got to do with the 'garment' getting rich? Do you have any clue as to how much they make in traffice fines as opposed to other streams of revenue? It is a pittance. What's wrong in them trying to keep our streets safe?

    My wife got into a minor accident with some idiotic speedster once. Thankfully, all were safe but it could have been a lot worse. IMO, all reckless drivers should be fined much more heavily and banned from driving, and the more serious ones thrown into jail.

    Traffic fines are a pittance. About S$30-S$40mio per fiscal year.

    But the statement made was "No wander our Garment are so rich. More car more rich."

    What's wrong with that statement? Motor taxes, along with excise duties, make up ~ 5% of receipts per fiscal year. That's not a percentage to scoff at.

    If you are using handsfree, the police won't spot you already..
