    Default Prosumers... FZ50 or S9600??

    hi everyone,
i'm new to the photography world, had tried both the Panasonic FZ50 and Fujifilm S9600.. but can't seem to be able to choose between the two.

are the following specs important factors to be considered? in which circumstances that they'll be used?

    ___________FZ50__________|_________S9600__________ _

    Shutter Speed
    _____60secs - 1/2000______|_______30secs - 1/4000_____

    ISO
    _____80 - 3200___________|__________80 - 1600________

    Lens
    ___________Leica_________|_________Fujinon?_______ ____
    __35 - 420 mm equiv (12x)__|____28-300mm equiv___(10x)__
    _____F2.8 - F3.7__________|_________F2.8-4.9___________

any advises? all comments are welcomed.
    thanks all!

    S9600 -> http://www.dpreview.com/news/0608/06082412fujis9600.asp
    FZ50 -> http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/panasonicfz50/

i like the panasonic, but prefer AA batteries... and from the specs comparisons... i really dun know how to choose....

some people say fz50's low light pictures are not as good as S9600, is it true?
and also, the fz50's zoom range starts from 35 compared to S9600, starting from 28... is it a big difference?

    i'd appreciate all advices...
    thanks!

    Depends on your photography interest...

If u like to shoot scenery and landscape, 28mm is better (yes, it is noticeably wider than 35mm)

If u like to shoot animals (eg.. in zoo), then the 420mm (at F3.7 with IS) is better (yes, the fujifilm has cleaner high ISO, but that still cannot make up for the difference)...

what about picture quality? is there any difference between these two models?

what about the shutter speed? 60sec-1/2000 vs 30sec-1/4000, is it an important factor to consider?

i'm still unsure of what i'd like to shoot more... thinking of shooting a bit of each and then see what i really like...

any comments about AA batteries vs panasonic's battery? i keep having the tot that AA are more convenient and easily available in the event when spare batteries runs flat...

fuji's noise performance is prolly better than the panasonic's.
panasonic has more longer telephoto while fuji has wider wide angle. there is def a difference between 28mm and 35mm.

which one u need, only u can decide. get the one that u feel u actually like to use and like the results.

the shutter speed prolly wont make much difference. u prolly would hardly use 1/4000 or 60 secs.

personally, i prefer AA batteries. but then again, to each his own.

Not sure about the pic quality between these 2 models.. u should do a search to get feedback from actual owners.

Shutter speed wise, I doubt u will miss the difference between 60sec-1/2000 and 30sec-1/4000... So for a general user, I would says the difference here is not an important factor

Personally I prefer AA batteries, since AA rechargeables are easily replaceable and they last pretty long these days. Lithium is nice and light, but backups/replacements cost more..

hmm, actually, this is again personal preference. some ppl (like me) prefer noise performance to IS... cos in the end when shooting pics like animals, u still still need a relatively high shutter speed (at least 1/200) to freeze their movements. IS MIGHT not help if ur using 1/60 or 1/100 + IS. of cos, there are situations when IS is really useful...

for the telephoto... how big is the difference between 300mm vs 420mm?
will i still be able to get a good zoom to the animals (e.g. in the zoo) with the s9600?

ya, i prefer AA too... cos they are easily available "in case of emergency"

so the s9600 will perform better at higher ISO?

any recommendations of the shops that i can go to? any idea what's the price for these two models? i've checked the s9600 at cathay, was quoted $860 without card...

there is quite some difference between 300mm and 420mm. depends how much u need.
imo, s9600 would be better at ISO 200 onwards.
    for me, i go cathay

thanks, btw, does the Aperture size matters?
    for s9600 is F2.8-4.9
    fz50 is F2.8 - F3.7

    what'll be the different when at 300mm (f4.9) & 420mm (f3.7)
i'm a bit confused about the Depth of field, using the aperture size to blur out the background.... what's the different between f4.9 & f3.7 during full zoom?

thanks... now at least i can visualize the difference better....

as u can see.. tis is taken wif a 70-200 on a 350D. focal length abt. 320mm..

tis is taken wif e S2 IS.. focal length 432mm.

dere is a more up-close and personal look to e S2 shot IMO..

The Canon S3IS is also one of the favourites with pple who like long zoom prosumers. Since u seem to be looking at long zoom prosumers u should also compare with this Canon..

If u compare the specs, u'll see that it is lighter (and probably more compact) as compared to the other two.. reason because it lacks the barrel zoom ring lens that the panasonic and fujifilm has. Having a manual barrel zoom ring is really nice though. Pic quality wise, it should be pretty good except for noisy high ISO (fujifilm should still be better in that area). Again, search for feedback from owners.

Oh yah.. the Canon is also lacking the flash hotshoe to mount external flash.. whether this is critical is dependant on u..

hi stk, i think i'd still like the idea of having manual barrel rings... :P
and the S3IS is a 6MP camera rite? from a newbie point of view, when i think about it... if i use the s9600 to take a full zoom picture, and then crop it a bit to "zoom" in, will i be able to get a similar "zoom" level as the s3is? or will i be able to get something near that kind of zoom?

    thanks!

LOL... i also have this problem, difficulties in deciding FZ50 or S9600 but...
to me the main concern is MegaOIS of FZ50 comparing with great night photos produced by S9600... both have theirs pros and cons but rather i was quite disappointed with the level of noise produced by FZ-series... when compared to Fuji especially anything more the ISO200...
thats why the question i'm asking myself... is Image Stabiliser really that IMPORTANT? haha

use it and you know... especially at the tele end.
@ 300mm the fuji might need a 1/300s shutter to get sharp shot (going by 1/focal length rule) while the pana might only need 1/40s to get the same image (not as good for moving object tho)
