Default New flash from Metz

Seems that Metz has come out with something to take on the market with the 580EX for canon...

mecablitz 58 AF-1 digital

Finally more options for us ...

Another link.. the link above seems to be having problems...

http://www.letsgodigital.org/en/1061..._58_af1_flash/

http://www.letsgodigital.org/en/1079...8af1_flashgun/

and it comes with a USB port for you to download and customize the flash! COOL!

It seriously looks good ...

I too bought the 54 not long ... sigh ...

But i'm pretty disappointed they removed the multifunction command dial present on the 54.

Another thing would be that - is metz gradually doing away with the SCA adaptors that made them where they are today with just software upgrades via a USB port? ... It somehow seems so.

The build is another - resembling their cheaper, entry-level counterparts.

My friend recently bought one. First one's zoom head died on him after 3 uses. Then he went back to the shop to change for a new one. Now his current one also have occassional zoom head error indication.

wow...i'll be knocking on wood because so far mine is a ok.

this flash is great, easy to use, and the fill flash thingee is a godsend. costs less than the 580exII but the main reason i bought it and love it is because of the color of the skintones...nice and soft, no harshness even without any gary fong or omnibounce. it really does an incredible job. hopefully i won't be posting here that mine broke too...if you're in the market for an 580exII, try the metz 58 out.

Precisely the reasons why metz should be considered over the original speedlites ...

I'm still using a 54MZ4 which does the job very well and where ETTL fails, i have the option to use the thyristor mode with full automatic controls unlike the new 580EX II which one has to still manually dial in settings.

Metz has both fully dedicated models for cameras from specific manufacturers, like this new 58 AF-1, and dedicated SCA models, like the 54 MZ4/4i.

So, if one has several camera brands (I am guilty here), the Metz 54 MZ4/4i is still the most suitable.

Don't think it'll work. The Metz by default definitely won't take commands with ETTL from the ST-E2. So should you want to work with 550/580/430/420 speedlites, you'll be better off with Canon.

PC sync port - no.

Yup, the 54MZ4 is the only one with the interchangeable hotshoe should you have multiple systems. Another headache would be is that different SCA adaptors work with different models from the same manufacturer.
