Oranges

My own C & C for the pic:

1. From my monitor, this is quite bluish
2. the subject is almost dead center
3. The depth of field is not deep enough from the orange to the side of the bowl
4. The bowl is not clean.

I would really appreciate highly compositional c & c as I am not very technical when it comes to photography. Enjoy!

Techinicalities aside, this is horribly boring. That IMO is the biggest problem with it, rather than any technicality.

Attempting to come up with a witty reply? Took you pretty long I'll be nice, try a more innovative angle of approach, rather than a straight on shot.

compositionally speaking, it's fairly normal. and you can't run away from techniques.

i'm not sure what you have, but i think you have something simple here which can be explored further. think of this frame in terms of subject (orange) subject's container (bowl) and background. have an image in mind how any of these can be substituted with something else, different form? different colour?

and i suggest you work with a reflector (any white cardboard which reflects light) with an external flash/lightsource (window light can be good sometimes ... with the haze now you might just get some nice soft lighting)

the idea is to test it out, make a series, and we'll work from there. it's too early to tell from this picture, it's not fundamentally so bad, and since you already pointed out quite a number of problems yourself, i'm sure you're capable of something better.

Get rid of the bowl. Try exploring with the waves of the background fabric, because the white frame of the bowl is a distraction in terms of color.

And why did you have to hit Stoned that hard? We are entitled to our own opinions, and diversity is a trait that evidently the hardest to come by aye?Perhaps your photo just didn't work for him...

Well basically, i don't live to watch your thread. Who was the childish one anyway who went to do a search for 3 of my threads just to leave comments like "boring", "cliche", etc. I wonder. Honestly, i pity a loser like you who has nothing better to do with his life than to attempt to censure me!

When I placed my original comment, I meant no malice. In fact, I never mean any malice when I give comments or critique unless first provoked. "Boring", to me, means that it does not strike me particularly in any way and does not evoke any sense of emotion from me. I would like to see something that approaches the subject in a fresh manner. In essence, I'm challenging you to see differently from every other tom, dick and harry who would pick up a PnS and approach the subject with no forethought whatsoever. Let me ask you, what were you thinking of when you made this image. Can you even answer me? Did you give any special thought to what you were trying to achieve with it?

The reason why i didn't type this much in the original post was because I did not have the time to type out that much then. I had hoped that you would re-evaluate and think why I considered it boring, but instantly you jumped to attack me instead. I don't spend my time on this forum bombing other people's threads. I evaluate things and images objectively and I only criticise when I can pin point what I dislike about the image.

Please, don't ask for CnC when you're too wimpy to take negative criticism. Did you expect everyone to say "wow, brilliant image of an orange!"? Photography is, by nature, highly subjective and you must expect someone to somewhere to dislike it. There is NO photograph that 100% of the people who view it will love, as with all art. In fact, I brought my friend to the Henri Cartier-Bresson exhibition this year and she didn't like half his work! People that dislike the image is part and parcel of producing any form of art.

I was wondering yesterday who dug up my old threads that had long died and I was wondering to my self who was this childish little fart. After some browsing of the forums, I realised that it was you, the orange guy. If you notice, in the very first post that I replied to you, I said it was ok that you didn't like my image, it's all personal and whether other people like it or not is not going to stop me from producing my photographs. I took you, what I assumed was a genuine poster, seriously and I didn't flame you. Later I realised you were just commenting to get back at me, so I decided to respond in kind on the rest of the threads.

For everyone's reference, here are the threads where the TS decided to declare war on me because I criticised his photo. Notice the dates of the post.

Photography is the opposite of painting. You should remove whatever doesn't add value to the pic. In this case, what's with the ugly white bowl? Do put in some thought into what you are trying to bring out when you shoot since I don't see a story here.

Give yourself more room and don't be so technical about photography, maybe you'll enjoy it more that way.

yeah, it's overexposed, this is where I need a light meter very badly, I'm just guessing how much exposure is needed when the slave flash fires.
