Thread: SLR zoom lens max F2.8 why?

  1. #1

Default SLR zoom lens max F2.8 why?

Are there any zoom lens for DSLR with apreture faster than F2.8 in the market? If not why? I know old generation prosumers like canon and olympus cams have f2.0 and f1.8 max at wide angle.

let me hazzard a guess, the companies have potential to sell fast primes, otherwise everyone buys fast zoom lenses.

    Olympus Zuiko has a 35-100mm f2.0.
    Yes, it cost a bomb.

the f2.0 on a prosumer camera isn't the same as f2 on an slr lens, the same way a 35-105mm rating on a prosumer isn't a true 35-105. you get these values because the sensor size is much smaller. if you compare pictures taken by by prosumers and slrs, you'll see a big difference in depth of field even though both shots may be taken at the same aperture.

there *have* been some zooms with max apertures bigger than 2.8, but those are usually not much bigger, e.g f2.6. my guess is that it's already pretty hard to make a zoom that's sharp wide open at f2.8... may be too expensive to do a f2 or f1.8 zoom with current technology. it's like how even the super expensive canon 50 f1 wasn't as good a performer as the slower lenses.

i guess we'll see faster zooms with time. there seem to be more f1.2 primes released these days.

And I am also guessing that zooms bigger than 2.8 would be hard to construct.Heavy and bulky.

DSLR has considerably larger senors and require much larger lens. To make a zoom for DSLR with f/1.8 will require much larger lens and will be much more expensive. The question asked will be whether it makes economic sense to pay for that much extra for a 0.5~1 stop.

the lens element will be really huge.
thus making it big, heavy, bulky.

do not think one will enjoy lugging it around for PJ or events.
more like a weight lifting event than a photographic event.
