Default anyone have done an photo exhibition before?

    Hi all...

Have you done a photoexhibition before? If yes... please give your sincere advice on how one should go about to organise it. From beginning to the end of the stage. Thanks.

actually just did a one for my house house today..

you must have some pictures beforehand first of course..
select the good/revelant ones, crop them to your required size.. the most common sizes are 8R and S8R for exhibitions.. then send them for printing..

you'll also need to get mounting boards and the photo mount spray.. have to cut the boards to size and also include a 1 to 1.5 inch border around the photo.. draw some guidelines to help you align the photo, then spray the back and mount.. alternatively, you can also use glue or blu-tack, but find it not as nice..

for display, try to get those display boards with the furry surfaces.. just need to stick the hook type of velcro on the back of the mounting boards.. if its those hard type, then you can use blu-tack..

    hope this helps..

substation is quite cheap. if u haf frens dat r affiliated wif them, u can get realli cheap rates. my fren did an exhibition there recently. its not darn big, but i tink its enuf lah...depending on how many photos u wanna put up or wat u wanna do 2 e space.
as for sponsors, u would haf to go speak to them personally. mayb canon? but usually they wan sumting in return. for eg, for canon, they might wan u to use their printer to print ur pix, and put their name in ur poster or advert (dis would b good 4 u too...save $$ on printing )
btw, may i ask wat kinda exhibition u doing??

make sure your concept is strong first, and decide which segment of market you intend to target.

do your research. browse museums, galleries, magazines to get a sense of standards and ideas to follow and not to follow.

talk to everyone. organisers, galleries, sponsors, photographers.

be prepared to work hard on your first solo because gatheirng credibility will be most difficult. and take time to make it good.

U can try and approach Photographic Society of Singapore (PSS). They may be able to help u apply for grant from National Arts Council (NAC), which can help to defray the costs. You can also rent the gallery above them for the exhibition.

Some stuff to consider/ ask yourself ...

    1. Are you exhibiting to sell your prints, or publicise your name, and skill? This would help you determine the kind of prints you'd show.

    2. Do you wish to exhibit by yourself, or do you want to do a group or duo show? Working with a partner or in a team can help cut down on costs and get more work done.

    3. What's the theme or subject matter you wish to exhibit? Like Stefen said, having a strong concept is important. If you are able to 'sell' your concept, that would be useful when it comes to approaching and convincing sponsors.

    4. What kind of space do you want to exhibit in? Don't limit yourself to just traditional gallery spaces. If those turn you down, consider shopping malls atriums or walkways that host visual art exhibitions, or even the art schools, or the libraries. Visit these spaces and see what kind of stuff they show.

    5. When do you want to exhibit, and for how long? Most spaces and sponsors need a few months' advanced notice. 6 months is a comfortable amount of time for you to do your research and plan.

    6. What size are your prints? Do they fit well in your exhibition space? How are they to be mounted or framed? If you are selling your prints, determine your price range.

    7. What kind of sponsorship are you looking for? Sometimes sponsors respond better when you can tell them your long term plans, and the kind of support you are looking from them. IMHO, it's better to look for a sponsor (eg: printer, equipment, exhibition space) you're comfortable working with, and are willing to build a working relationship with, than with someone who gives you the money, but is nasty, and makes you feel obligated to them.

    8. What kind of publicity do you want? Do you need namecards to be made? Posters? Booklets or brochures? Where can you place them? Is there an opening event?

Lots of stuff to think about, but once you have it all sorted, it gets easier. Good luck!

I've not done an exhibition there, but I did write in to ask how they go about curating their works. From what I remember they require proposals to be sent in about 6 months in advance. They will review your proposal and portfolio and offer you the space if you're selected.

There are several spaces available there for visual arts exhibitions. Best to write in or call them directly to get updated information. They are quite helpful.
