Other than serving its primary function to protect our precious lens.
Why do B+W filters stand out? B+W = The BMW of filters? HOYA cost XXXX times lesser Comments? |

as long as you're happy with your purchase, it's money will spent, B+W or Hoya. on a practical note B+W filters have brass mounts and thus will not 'stick' on to your lenses making removal difficult. |

Not easy to dispute this one.
They all look the same right? Just the same old glass? lets say.. diamonds, crystals...dont they all look the same? Why the different price for the different models? Well, becos in everything there are different grades of the same thing. Some are of higher grades than the others thus of different quality. The may look the same but they are not. Have you consider the coating on the glass too? Or the mounting metal as one forumer has highlighted. Many things looks the same though they are not. Why do you doubt the glass use on the filter but not never question the glass used on expensive lens? Why is that 500 year old wood furniture more expensive than an Ikea replica? Why do you choose that Metzeler tires rather than that Kumho rubber? |

Actually price can be an indicator of all sorts of things.
It can be an indicator of quality. It can be an indicator of rarity. It can be an indicator of demand. It can be an indication of the existence of a monopoly. So the fact that a B+W filter costs much more than a Hoya filter can mean a lot of things. Or it can mean nothing but a premium consumers are willing to pay for brand equity. |

Hiee..
From my personal experience. Hoya seem to use a back "c" ring type spring to hold the glass in the filter ring. You can press it in with some spring action. This will create gap with the spring action and cause dust to "seep" into these gaps. And using lens cleaning brush or cloth will result in fibres getting stuch in these gaps. While B+W, filters, they are hard screwed and its rigid as it is. No Springing action. Infact, i got two pieces of Hoyas today and felt awkward with its build(i have been a HOYA user for the last 10yrs). Lately....I did import some B+W from HK recently and find that even the cheaper single coated - non multicoated ones (non MRC) is better in keeping the dust out from the inner lens.

When I compare B+W, Hoya and Nikon NC, Hoya tend to have more yellowish cast.
I believe some Nikon user did some test and post in their forum before, all filter degrade the photo slightly when compare to no filter, but hoya degrade more than the other 2. But all these are only visible if pixelpeeping is performed .

B&W filters are not rare. Demands for B&W filters will always be dampened by the pricing. There are always cheaper alternatives. There is no monopoly in filters supply. So what is the reason for the higher pricing? Why are people willing to pay more? |

I have not tried the filters on the same lenses so maybe its a biased comaprison. Both were 17-40's and at 17 mm I noticed that the one with the hoya filter on has slight more CA than the other copy. (both at f/4) its not a fair comparison as they were shot under different conditions. I guess the difference is only perseptible if you pixel peep..

Because they're worth it. Hold a B+W filter and a Hoya filter side by side and feel the quality difference. If you can tell the difference, you can then decide if it's worth it. If you can't tell the difference, then it doesn't matter to you.
FYI, UV filters are not just about protecting your lens. If you just wanted to protect your lens, you're better off using the lens cap-- less chance of glass shards cutting the lens front element. Wai Leong === |

I think we should not underestimate a piece of simple looking glass.
A $250 lens is made primarily of glass while a $2000 lens is also glass. The same plain looking glass are apparently different in the quality of the glass as well as the coating, and hence the difference in performance between lenses. Though an UV filter is a more simple piece of glass, it could be a limiting factor. Why would you want to risk reducing the performance of your lens? A filter is not that expensive anywa and they last for many many many years. |
