Hello:
I have joined the Olympus Club recently. There's this DOF preview button (the same button we use to set white balance), and I still can't figure it out after going through the manual. When I press the button, I am supposed to have an idea of the DOF. But What I can see through the View Finder is only the darkening of the scene. Can you please fill me with some information? Thank you. Last edited by Silence Sky; 10th October 2006 at 04:20 PM. |

when the screen darkens, the aperture also stops down to your chosen aperture
and if you look close enough, you can see the DOF but..... why strain your eyes when you have a nice big LCD to look at click on shutter and look at the LCD to check the DOF can zoom in somemore

Thank you very much for your response. You are right at making use of the LCD. Thanks again. |

Hi,
Is the button located to the top-right direction of the LCD screen? The picture is like a rectangle with 2 triangles underneath it yeah? IF it is, ermmm... nothing happens when i depress it... Is my camera faulty? |

I prefer to use DOF preview than to first snap a shot and review it on the LCD screen to check the actual DOF. But even more useful to me is how I use the DOF preview button to 'lock' a lens aperture setting before taking it (while still depressing the DOF preview) out for reverse lens macro photography.

I mean, if smthg is faulty with the cam, i wanna get it to Oly SG asap. Even IF the button is customisable, nothing happens when i depress it... thus the worrying factor. Not to mention the manual is not exactly user-frenly IMO... so dun need to bother to wonder if i even bothered to read the user manual... i tried, i couldn't get any further on my own, thus i turned to this forum for help, thot that was why we had forums to begin with... i'm sorry if that bothers u in any way. Have a nice day all, Eric ![]() |

it doesn't bother me lah... try customising the button if you suspect that it is faulty.

you have to look hard enough to see the difference, sometimes the change is so minor one might think nothing has happened |

Also it depends on what your F-stop is set to...if you have it set to f/3.5 (or whatever the widest position of the lens is), then you will notice NOTHING (because that's the opening at all times unless you are in the process of taking a picture). However if you have it set to anything else you'll at least hear a click (depending on the lens build) and see the viewfinder darken, especially if you have it set to f/22 (or the smallest opening).

The first time I read the manual I totally missed the fact that the camera had the ability to do a DOF preview...it took watching a video about the camera to learn about it.

Yeah? I'm going to try and re-read the whole manual again... Hopefully 2nd time round can pick up/spot more stuff...
It's pretty thick some more... Eric ![]() |
