This is an excellent series. I like the way you handle the lighting and the shadows. The way you compose the pictures and manage the colours brings a touch of nostalgia into the photos. The clouds and the colour of the sky help to suggest a hot sunny day in Joo Chiat. However, I will like to think that these pictures are a little bit over sharpened for my personal taste. I think you have also done a good job on the sky to bring out that special flavour of Joo Chiat. Looking at your pictures cannot help but bring back memories of my childhood days in Joo Chiat.

Thanks for your comments. There was actually very little sharpening applied to the shots, and some shots weren't sharpened at all. The lens did most of the sharpening on its own. The same go for the colors, no saturation was applied in the post processing. Some light burning on the skies and that's about it. I spent less than a couple of minutes with each shot, including the slight edits and resizing.

Got a PM question about which digital camera was used. This series on Joo Chiat was shot on good ol film... 100VS to be exact.

not familiar with the area but i do like the nice colors. Ppl often complain that its hard to capture things in sg due to the harsh lighting. You seem to have done it quite well. What camera would be my question, not cos it would have affected the outcome but more out of curiosity. GR series or one of your leicas?

![]() With harsh lighting, it's good to work with film due to the extended dynamic range which some films have over digital in order to achieve half decent shots which properly expose all parts of a scene. I'll be hard pressed to get an even exposure for the sky and ground with a digital sensor. This series was done on the GR21, I almost never take the Leicas out these days. Thank you much for your comments sk. |

Scans were done on an Imacon 646. Post processing includes slight USM of certain images, curves and dodging. I think I spent an average of 3 mins with each image so there was a lot less post processing I would have normally done when I work with digital images.

Actually for such small shots, it doesn't really matter what scanner one uses for the scans. The 4870 is still a very capable machine that is able to accept a wide variety of film formats, and it scans them pretty well though a little slow.
