    Default 'Friendly' Software

    Dear all,

Just to share something I encountered over the weekend which made me think. I was with a conversation with a friend of mine and somehow he brought out a topic on pirated softwares.

He knew I was into photography and so he asked why did I bother to spend so much money on Photoshop CS2 when you can get the pirated version across the causeway at $5 and features wise is the same! I couldn't answer him except to say I support the real version... hmmm... not a very convincing answer...

So I poise the question to you all. Why bother spending hundreds of bucks for it when you can get the same one at $5?

*Disclaimer: I am in no way of supportive of piracy by starting this thread

I cannot afford CS2, so i bought the original version of Elements instead. So why not a pirated CS2 since it will be cheaper than Elements?

I have never been a fan of pirated stuff, and i will rather spend more money in doing the right thing. I will also not like running afoul of the law.

Buy original if you make money from the software. It's only reasonable.

Piracy is never right, juz that no individual is caught/charged. Not getting caught does not equate to it being right to infringe copyrights.

Juz do the right thing and dont bother with other's opinion. U cant change the world.

    Backup Copy.

A friend of mine told me this story of his client. The guy runs a business so all his software was original. However, one day his designers couldn't reinstall CS1 (quite some time back) cos somehow the disc was scratched. Tech support wanted to charge for a new set of discs (Duh) and the client was not happy about it. This was not some $40 PC game but some 1K plus of software , registered and paid for with cold hard cash. So, one of the guys had an idea and went to grab a copy from the neighbourhood store. Lo and behold, the whole installation worked with the CDKey. Every filter worked as it should, no corrupted images except once in a while, windows does hang up (the usual )

Best part was, the neigbourhood shop told the guy to come back and change if cannot work,

So my friend asked me this same question too, I couldn't give a satisfactory answer as well.

My friend posted me this question b4 and my answer is simple:

Priacy is against the law. You can get fined or go to jail if you get caught. It is your judgement call to determine if you want to take the risk.

For me, it is not worth to take this risk. The choice rests in the individual.

how can it be the same thing?

tens, hundreds and thousands of dollars poured into research and development, testing and debugging, countless man hours and effort put into writing and re-writing lines and lines of codes, marketing and distributing, technical support and so on....versus "click copy"

    Why use Original

    1. Support
When you use original, you gain immediate access into the support network from Adobe. You can talk to the guys at Adobe without fear in you, like if they will ask you for your product key or anything.

You also get to know and meet many other professionals like yourself through regular user group discussions sessions.

When you develop a relationship with them, there is a possibility of introductions to major equipment firms and you just might have free toys to play with when you want to, if it meet their needs. Remember, just maybe..... : P

If you are good, they might invite you to give comments on their software and many more ppl will know you are good (hopefully).

Thats something the pirate can't give you. Neither can they introduce you to the guy filming the porn next door. And pirates never ever invite you for dinner or buy you food. They will never say you are good, and even if they say u are good, its not good either.

    Fair play for all

It also allow a level playing field for all photographers, to maintain a certain fee structure that is sustainable to pay for subscription and upgrading of the software. Otherwise, you will have some who undercut others because their cost is so much lower of only $5. End of the day, you wonder why we photographers are getting "exploited". End of the day, who lose?

    faster and better marketing/R&D

We are all glad that Adobe dishes out little toys for the community fast, and we want it fast. But each time you know of someone who steals a software from Adobe, he is pushing your new tools back by a couple of weeks or even months. New features that could have been incorporated into a new version will now be pushed back to the next version. And each version will now be more expensive.

Its sad to see that there are those who are blatantly using photoshop or other adobe for years, when it is no longer a matter that one cannot afford it. Its is just a matter of convenience and they are proud of it.

Those who steal software are likely to steal other things as well.

Mr Brown once wrote an article saying that the service level in pirated shops far surpass the original shops. Too bad I can't locate it any more.

If someone stole the keys to a new car and tried to sell you the car which doesn't belong to him to you at 10% of the market price. Knowing it's so much cheaper and knowing it's stolen, would you have bought the car? You get a good deal and he gets a profit. Fair?

It's entirely the same with software. When pirates sell you the software, they sell you stolen goods. The programmers do not get a cent out of the deal. Fair?

Because the fella selling the pirated stuff is making pure profit. The distributor selling the legitimate software are bounded by so many contracts, I don't think they're happy.. Obviously they will not provide the better service. Most of the time I'll have to contact the support in the US to get good service. The service & support sector here got a lot to learn.

can't equate them together like this. The pirated vendors under constant fear of getting busted and jailed but seems like everyone got a better experience with them .

Every job will be bounded by tonnes of T&C. Doesn't mean that becos I got to abide lots of T&C gives me a reason to provide lousier service?
