Is true i just got my EFS 17-55mm f 2.8 lens for $1,580.00. Got a friend to buy it for me last weekend. I think Singapore prices are expensive because firstly as we can afford it, and the goverment earns 5% from every sale we made.

I got my ixus 50 in HK and it was much cheaper. I've been told that camera accessories are also cheaper BUT you need to know where to shop for those since they're more niche.

Hi Terence, may I know which shop did your friend buy this lens from in HK? Might ask a friend to help me buy too. How is the lens? Heavy? I seem to recall that this comes with IS but maybe I remembered wrongly. Thanks!

I give him a list of shops from this web site: http://www.ygdragon.net/shops.htm
Price: HKD7,700. A bit expensive for a non-L EF lens. Only good for 1.6 bodies (350D, 400D, 20D, 30D) Yes it is heavy and it has IS. But Lens made in Japan. Fast (USM) and Accurate. Did i also mentioned f2.8!!!! |

Hey thanks for the speedy response. I have another friend who might be going Osaka soon, see whether can lombang to check this out for me. I have a 350D that's why am keen on the lens and yes f2.8 and IS are super attractive to me. However heavy lens is a turnoff though. I lugged my 350D + kit lens and my Slic tripod up the mountain and halfway through I was having second thoughts about bringing both along. Think I have to find somewhere in Shanghai to try out the lens first before making such a big investment . |

Hi,
Thanks for ideas in this forum and the below link (do a search for camera shops) I found some of the best places to shop. I was able to do a price comparison and make an informed choice without being taken for a ride. I spent all my hard earned pennies - HK is slightly cheaper & I found every one friendly & helpful too. Cheers http://hongkong.asiaxpat.com/ |
