Hi, I am "hunting" for a good travel lens. I have seen an Ad on Sigma 18-200 and I am wondering how's the performance of this lens on Canon 20D. I know the Nikon has a 18-200 VR lens and I hope that canon can match that soon - 18-200 IS L. Thanks.

It is a very versatile all-in-one lens with a great zoom range. But bear in mind that all-in-one lenses may do the job, but not very well. If you are a sticker for image quality the lens may not satisfy you. Also, f/6.3 at the long end is very slow and you'll need good light to make that work. Are we speaking of the older version here or the newer OS version?
If possible I would recommend getting something along the lines of the Sigma 17-70mm, Canon EF-S 17-85mm, EF 17-40mmL, Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8, Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 etc. Whether the zoom range is sufficient for you is up for you to judge. Take a look at the settings that you used for your previous shots and see where your predominant interests lie. Do you shoot wide or long, or for that matter, do you shoot super-wide and super tele? A two lens setup to cover the 18-200mm range may be a better idea than just a single lens to do the trick. Of course, with traveling the concern is weight and bulk, but if one of your primary reasons for going on the trip is to take photos, you'll need the quality for it. |

i used the 18-200mm before and i liked it. the colour and contrast was good. it's nowhere as sharp as my current tamron 28-75 but then again, it's an all in one lens. id say go for it, or its smaller cousin the 18-125mm which has slightly better optical performance

Thanks for the advice. Will possibly go and check out on the Sigma 18-200 with OS. Come to think of it, I have the Canon 17-40L and a Sigma 70-200 EX HSM. The latter I feel is a little too bulky to carry on trips especially when I need to lug bags and kids....
Thus, just exploring other options. Will also check out the sigma 17-125. Thanks again. |

Sigma's coming up with an optical stabilization model on the 18-200 range. maybe worth the wait?

My Picture quality for the 18-125mm was reasonable - for an amateur.
But I don't like the lens creep on the Sigma 18-125mm. I bet the 18-200mm will be likewise |

It is a good travel lens as it is lightweight plus giving a 11X zoom range. The image quality is good and you can photoshop if needed. This lens is so versatile that sometimes I did not bother to use the other lenses that I have brought along. This lens help to solve dust problem from changing lenses. Relatively "cheap" and good lens for travel. The lens softens at 200mm so if you hardly need 200mm there are better zoom lens to consider, esp. those with f2.8. Thanks for sharing. Pardon my ignorance, what is lens creep? Also, the latest Sigma 18-200 with OS, is it in the market yet? Will sure like to try it on on my 20D. Going for a year end mountain trek in thailand, so it will be good to have something practical than to lug a load.
Worse scenario, I will just bring my 17-40L along and my tamron 90 SP. |

I do not know if the lens is in yet. But here is a specification for you to read up first on the lens
