actually taking the trouble to comment should be welcomed
no matter if it "sucks" or not

it is way better then a image with a hundred view and no comments

In my most humble opinion, if you post something in a forum with the intention of inviting criticism to whatever you post, then I think you should be open minded enough to receive the criticism, be it good or bad. Of course, it is a different story if the criticism is not directed at your work, but towards the person.

Critique or comment? Well, I don't think you can draw a distinct line down the middle, can you? I find it intriguing that people always tend to want to categorise things into general broad distinction like "good or bad", "black or white", "yes or no". Hey, life ain't that simple! oops, sorry for my OT!

Of course, I'd love to hear from people who comment or criticise, as to why they pass the comment/criticism. That'll surely be helpful. However, I think at the end of the day, the person at the receiving end should be able to discern for him/herself what is consrtuctive and what is not.

Still, I feel that people should be allowed to express themselves freely, as long as it is not a personal attack. Of course, with freedom of speech comes responsibility, and the person dispensing comments or criticisms, too, should be able to stand up to and beholden to statements he/she makes.

I think we should be matured enough to discuss and debate in a forum like this. When we argue vehemently and defend our own views/stand over issues, we must also understand that the other party will do so likewise.

I've made some great friends from the net, who hold completely different and opposite views from mine. We argue fiercely and defend our stands over issues, which sometimes seems to be overly heated. However, from amongst the differing views, we should try and reach a state of understanding and reconciliation. This is where we all must agree to disagree.

While the critics should not make personal attack, I think similarly, the person at the receiving end should not take comments and crticism too personally.

Personally, I feel that the level of maturity in local forums like CS, is still not there yet. People are still adopting the "either u r with us or against us" mentality, and even myself, am sometimes guilty of that. However, that should not deter ourselves from trying to bring discussions to a higher level. We need to constantly remind ourselves about this kind of mental pitfalls, as we are not perfect.

That's all I have to say.

    Cheers,

    Kenny

Unfortunately man, the society we live does not salute warriors.

    It garlands fence sitters.

I thought we are all photographers who spend all of our time to be commentators in a photo forum.

This is fun! Posters who suck, critics who suck, commentors who suck, advisors who suck and the list goes on.....

I think everybody sucks from time to time. The difference is that you'll never get to see it much from the pros and that's because they are their own critics, realize their own problems, rectify the problems or not show their problems. The newbies generally do not realize their problems and thinking they've done good enough to be posted for C&C, after gathering enough courage to do so, hoping that they will get good advice or good pointers to help them improve or to get praises to confirm what they've done is good enough. Let's face it, the moment we post for C&C, we should be ready to get all sorts of critics good or bad or no response at all. Take it with an open mind for we are all learning (whether learning to take better photos or learning to be a good critic). ;P

    It's really tiring giving "critiques"
I only post critiques if I see potential in the work
Some works speak for themselves and are of a level that is beyond me
and sometimes I just feel like making comments that can be taken any way you want

Whatever it is, if you take photographs and post them in a public forum, be prepared to take all sorts of comments. No one said that everyone had to be a critic.
And frankly if the work sucks on a basic level it's quite obvious to most people.
if you don't think it sucks then stand up and explain your picture lah.
we're not in kindergarden anymore my dear friends

    TEN COMMANDMENTS OF RECEIVING CRITIQUE

    1. Your photos are going to be viewed by everyday people, not photographers

    2. Everyday people don't know how to comment on technicalities

    3. Everyday people's vocabulary is limited

    4. Limited to:
    a. Swee
    b. how come i not inside the picture?
    c. hwah! what camera you use?
    d. bo swee
    e. what camera you use? why the picture like that one?
    f. this pix sux!

    5. There is no perfect photo. Every of your photo can be improved with a different angle, composition, time taken, PP, curves, subject, etc.

    6. Don't defend your photos if they are for critique. There must be something wrong for people to comment. Refer to rule no.5

    7. Prize winners are not perfect photos. Like beauty queens win because they took part. Many other chio bus out there never take part.

    8. If you think your photos don't deserve harsh comments, don't post them to attract harsh comments.

    9. If you think your photos will get harsh comments, don't post them cos you already knows it sucks.

    10. If you don't want critque, SAY you don't want critique.

    TEN COMMANDMENTS OF GIVING CRITIQUE

    1. You don't have to be a photographer when giving critique

    2. You don't need to have a better peice of work than the photo you are critiqueing (got such a word?)

    3. You MUST say WHY you like/don't like the photo

    4. You COULD provide suggestions.

    5. If you think the photo is too bad (sucks) for you to critique, keep quiet.

    6. Learn more words to use in your critique.

    7. Start with " I feel...", not "You should..."

    8. Your critique is a point of view. They are like asses... everyone has one.

    9. blurry photo means not sharp, does not mean no good.

    10. Sharp photos doesn not mean good lens!

at the end of the day.. despite ALL of this discussion. nothing is going to change.

    1) people are still going to say criticise or make comments or remakrs in ways that they wish to. whether constructively, not constructively, rudely, or whatever. and nothing anybody says, save for a ban by mods on any C&C whatsoever, is going to change that.

    2) people are still going to be offended by 1)

    3) people are still going to complain about 1) and the standards of commenting or criticism.

    4) people are still going to be criticising 3) for complaining about 1).

    5) people under 3) or 4) will still be posting questions like this... leading to further endless discussions which again will lead nowhere.

so the long and short of it is. lets just leave people to do what they like. as long as they are not in contravention of the posting terms and conditions then ireally dont see the big deal. and to keep raising htis issue. is really getting quite pointless.

I think you have not been following the forum too closely .... usually the ones who can't tolerate those "suck" comments were not the posters, but the sideliners ...
