I wonder why people keep on calling it E-3. It has no resamblence at all with E-3xx. If the looks can be compared with any camera it is the E-400 or the E-500. Definitely not like the E-3xx. So, my guess is that it will be called E-4 or E-5 or maybe, but just maybe E-1n but I don't think so.

Or... did I miss something?

There was an E-1(x) in the works, but the picture quality wasn't up to Olympus' standards.

E-2 was already trademarked by another company...therefore it had to be E-3.

There may never be an E-4 though, because in Japan "4" sounds very similar to "death"...would you buy an E-death, an E-13, or E-666?

I did live in apartment #13 on the 32nd floor onece for one year. Never cared about that kind of thing but I agree, if I was a manufacturer of anything I would not call the product "dead" from the start. I do however still believe that that is not all. Normally products are look alikes also. So they can not call the new camera E-3 because it does not look a bit like a camera with the horizontally swinging mirror and definitely not looks the tinyest bit like the E-3xx. So if you are right, E-1(x) was bad, E-2 was taken, E-4 = death then it must be E-5 or something else but not E-3. Not that the name is important for me, the looks and the functional preformance is something I care more about, but it is interesting how people have got the name already fixed.

We'll have to wait and see.

That is the old numbering system. Now they don't seem to care about mid range since they are not releasing any E-system dual digits. If that would be the case they should have renamed the E-500 and the E-330 to E-50 and E-30 and they should heve called E-400 as it is since it is actually a simpler and lighter camera than any other DSLR. Maybe the new "E-3" will be an E-40? Well, the pro photogs will not be very happy in that case I'd guess.

just hope that olympus will have one DSLR for pros and mids. So far they dont have any models for the mid-levels. The vertical-grip of the pre-production model too short leh.....

I think the new Oly series naming convention:

E-3xx - Creative series
E-5xx - Entry series
E-4xx - Mini series
E-x - Forever waiting and lasting series. Also the most valuable for money series. (Just wait 3 years then buy the old stock)

Just kidding

Actually, Corel has named their latest CorelDraw "X3" to get around that it's the 13th version ("X" being the Roman Numeral for "10").

Here's a fuller translation of the japanese interview, without Google's mentions of "E-1 successor aircraft":

certainly looks promising...
