sigma for me... i ever heard a canon user saying the reason for getting 17-40 instead of the sigma 18-50 is because sigma one is too sharp.

oops.. i dun mean to cause another debate. it's juz dat i was tinkin of gettin a 17-40 all e while.. however, i saw some pics. of e 18-50 and i was impressed by it. L or non-L does not really bother me much.. some 3rd party lenses hold themselves pretty well over e Ls in terms of quality and value for money.

I guess it will be best that you decide on either lens by yourself. Image quality aside (you have to evaluate it yourself), you might want to consider the three following points: 1. Build + Weather seal 2. FTM (L series offer this; but do you use it?) 3. Weight |

As for build.. I believe unless you're the sort who likes to test drop your equipment.. build is not really an issue.. As for FTM... I believe most of the photogs in CS doesn't use it.. |

the new ex 18-50mm macro only saves you 8cm of minimum focusing distance, if that is important to you.

have to take note that 17-40mm L is for full frame as well, while 18-50mm is for APS-C (1.5-6x crop) censor only, so when up upgrade to full frame, 17-40mm become ultra wide, 18-50mm useable as a normal wide only (until the point without vignetting).
